3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey! So my husband just bought me a 1994 Toyota Camry LE 4Cyl 2.2L DOHC, well the motor was blown up so we knew we were gonna rebuild it. So we pulled the motor and I took it apart the other day and the connecting rod cap broke off and fell into the oil pan, there is a chunk taken out of the crankshaft, and a chunk taken out of the very bottom of the #1 cylinder, along with the connecting rod itself mangled up. So I figured I would start out with getting a new block for it and work from there. WELL that has turned out to be harder than I thought. Ebay has been of no use, and apparently because I'm a young woman (22yrs old) everyone I have talked to (all salvage yards, parts dealers, and machine shops) are trying to sell me A WHOLE MOTOR which I DO NOT need, nor want. Yes it would be the easiest and fastest way to get it fixed but I'm looking for my husband and I to rebuild this ourselves so we know the work is done right. And warrenty or not if what they sell me does go bad I'm not looking forward to having to pull the motor again and ship it back to them! Well I need a 5SFE bare block if anybody has one or knows where I can find one PLEASE let me know. I'm desperate as gas prices are KILLING me driving a mini van right now so I'd like to get my camry fixed soon! THANKS!!
I have a bare block sitting in my back yard and a cylinder head/intake/exhaust from a 95 camry 4 cylinder that I had a year ago. The engine blew up (threw a conn. rod bearing and I replaced it with another used one complete. If you are willing to come get it (It will need to be dipped and probably honed, etc, been sitting in my back yard covered with a plastic bag), we can work something out. I'll take some pics tonight if it'll work for you.

I say, chuck the four-banger and throw in a 3VZ-FE! V6 goodness, and still reasonable on gas!
The reason why there are few spare Toyota blocks lying around is because the motors rarely get damaged
enough that they need a teardown. And most people won't rebuild one anyway if it does need that level
of work, so it just gets scrapped.
I commend you for going to the effort to rebuild the motor. It's great to find people who will do that
for a motor that isn't from a classic muscle car.
Though I've never rebuilt a motor (but I would like to do that, some day) I'm at least doing something
that's a little bit in the same vein. (Work most people won't do.) I'm restoring my '92 V6 LE Camry as
we speak. It's a big job but lots of fun!
