3rd Generation air intake install help 93, v6 auto trans

Hey guys.

This is a spin off from the air intake thread.

i've decided to replace my filter box and put in a cone filter, and maybe i'll change the tube later, but whether i buy a short ram intake (sri) or a cold air intake (prolly a stage 2 that reaches down to the bumper) i have a few questions. (see attached pics for better example)..

Beside my air box, i noticed a metal "thingy" with a cable connected to it. i'm assuming this reads the temp?

what do I do with it? how do I remove it? where should the intake go in?

let's just say for the sake of conversation i'm just replacing the air box and adding a Spectre Air filter.

the yellow is the air box
the red is "i dont know what to do with this thingy"
the blue is where I think the new air filter should go..

This is what it normally looks like under my hood by the air filter

this is the part i'm confused about

just another view of the engine

If you go short ram, the tube goes between the throttle body(TB) and "(2)" a.k.a. the mass air flow(MAF) sensor. Then the cone filter goes in place of the air box. If you go cold air, it'll be in 2 sections. One section will go between the MAF and the TB. The other section will go between the MAF and the filter. The important thing to remember is that the MAF has to stay pretty much right where it is.

Hey you have to take off the factory air box (Big black thing)
otherwise known to you as...exhibit 1 lol

Anyways after you remove that box, the cone filter is going to be installed right after the MAF (exhibit 2)

It shoulld bolt right up.! If the tube is not long enough for the filter to clamp around you should look for a 2.5 - 3" coupler and go from there.

Good luck!

so pretty much number (2) which is the MAF stays where it is , and whether i go short or long (depending on which cialis is on sale that day) will go after?

pretty much - the box gets replaced and everything else, maf and the stuff after it (2) and (3) stay where they are, and just the box and beyond it will get replaced/added onto.

Hey I have the same engine. When you take off the MAF you'll notice that its a square hole and your cone filter is a circle. Therefore you are going to need a MAF adapter which makes the square into a hole.

TB-->tube-->MAF-->maf adapter-->filter

You can make your own maf adapter from dryer vent parts. Get the one that goes from a wall mount to a 3in tube.
[O] <- top view looking down at the round part. If i find a picture i'll attach it.

Good Luck

Cool

You are going to have to buy an adapter because the end of the Air Flow Meter is square. Just buy a 10 dollar Spectre brand adapter from O'Reilly's or CSK.

Here is a picture of mine, as a note do not take the screws out of that sensor you will destroy it. The cable is held in place by a small metal clip, just remove the clip and the connector slides off.

To make things a little bit easier for you, here's a few tips to help out: I own a 1992 toyota camry V6 as well, and i've looked at every available mod and upgrade possible for our models, and let me tell you, the options are very, very limited. There's nothing for turbos, superchargers, intakes, anything. And along the lines of air intake, there's only one option. That big "silver metal" piece with the plug connected to it...that's your MAF sensor. That unit cannot be removed or moved, and the plug cannot be left unplugged...try it, and you won't even be able to turn over your engine without it. Also, you cannot simply remove the air filter box and attach the Spectre filter, with MAF sensor has a rectangular opening, and requires a Spectre MAF sensor adaptor (specifically the one with the 3" outlet, as your Spectre filter will be meant for a 3" pipe), and to keep matters simple and cheap, if you just go to www.autozone.com and search for the spectre air filter (avail. in red, blue and white) and the MAF adapter, it will total around $35 bucks, shipped right to you. Then, the swap is very simple, 4 screws to remove the plastic air filter box from MAF sensor, put the 4 screws back into the MAF adapter to connect it to the MAF sensor, and place the Air Filter over the adapter opening, and use the clamp to tighten it on firmly, and voila. Simple, cheap, sounds a little cooler, and looks nice. Not as nice as true cold air, with metal hosing, but you'll have to suffice. There are no metal hoses to replace the rubber/plastic ones in as stock, however you could try to make one yourself, but it would be a bigger job than you could believe, as all the plugs and hoses in the stock tubes must be replaced and reconnected after, so in my opinion, just stick with the air filter mod for now, remember, K.I.S.S.: Keep It Simple, Stupid. Good Luck and enjoy, sorry I have to pics to show you step by step, but it's quite simple, and instructions are included with adapter and filter. Enjoy!
