How major a factor is the air filter in the car? i have a 97 camry and i was wondering if the factory air filter is good enough or if i needed to upgrade and if so to what? Thanks

for what goals?

performance you can switch to a short ram intake or cold air intake but those gains are minimal if any. but it would bring a great sound that makes driving a lot more fun

fuel economy no not really either unless your filter is really dirty

so basically unless you want to get a cool sound and have the money just skip it

there is no NEED to upgrade from a factory air filter. the K&N drop in may give a little better throttle response and a SRI(short ram intake) will give a better sound but other then that there is no real reason to upgrade.

bigbird is right.

I have a supercharged Camry and use a K&N drop in filter.
I notice a little change but not mutch...so without a supercharger i think you will notice nothing.

But your car will sound a bit agressive

You should just make sure your filter is clean and leave it be if you just want pure gas savings.

A short ram intake/cold air intake shouldn't technically give you any improvement in gas mileage but I saw a good improvement when I changed mine even though my filter wasn't really dirty...

but for the most part no just keep your filter clean if you dont want the growl of an aftermarket intake
