3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey guys I'm new to the Camry but not to cars, and im on here for my buddy who has a 99 v6. I'll be doing the mods for him since he knows more about stereos than engines.
I was hoping you could point me in the right direction for sites i can get parts. we'll be starting with the basics, exhaust, intake, computer.
welcome.. if you dont mind used part then check out the forsale section they have on here.. and also check ebay as you might find something that you like..

There aren't really any after market parts for Camrys out there. Just generic stuff like universal air intakes.
The v6 is a good engine, if he is really into performance have an exhaust shop chop the factory y pipe and re merge the downpipes into a new catback setup. Thats a good 10-15 horsepower in the top end right there and shouldn't cost more than $100.
Go with a short ram intake, no intake really makes a difference on our cars. The factory intake is damn good, it's just quiet. A catback exhaust wont really help with performance until he does the y pipe, but if he is going to do the y pipe try to keep the two pipes equal length or it will sound raspy and crappy.
Any good muffler will do for a tip but to really make a nice tone you need a muffler under the car and one at the tip. The reason the cars get so loud is because when we only have a muffler at the tip the sound absorbing material doesn't have a chance to do it's job before the exhaust exits the system, so put a nice borla under the car and another decent muffler at the tip, that will sound good.

factory Y
what you want to cut off and replace is in red

yes a short ram might take in a bit more hot air but there reallya re no net power gains or loss from it. it will just sound much nicer and some argue throttle response improved

i would be one of them that said felt a throttle response has improved. guess it depend on how sensitive you are to the cars.. and i did the toysome (sp?) mod to allow the tranny to shift harder and more aggressive.

i plan on doing that one, the coolant plug and a few others in the DIY section soon.
What about a chip or aftermarket tune for it?

i did the tranny shift as well, made a small difference as far as my sri throttle response it may have improved a bit but not noticeable enough for me to make a for sure judgment. Although I will say it sure does feel a lot faster
and chips/reflash/tune dont do much unless you are going fi
lucky is right about teh Y-pipe being equal legnths. mine isnt and although it performs well it sounds like poo.
depending on how much power hes lookin for the TRD S/C is a great mod as well. you can get some power from a tune but unless you go FI it may not be worth the money.
