Love the Gen 4 Camry....BUT everything is cheaply made
anybody who owns a gen4 realize that everything is cheaply made on it???? Im just saying this because everything on my gen 4 is starting to fall apart.........i got a couple door handles starting to crack, broken cup holders, broken plastic mirror covers on the sun visors, broken plastic door panels on the inside, and yesterday 3 bulbs in my dash burned out.......the list goes on, dont get me wrong i love my camry and its reliable but its cheaply made too.......
- umm.. nope. mine is still in pretty solid condition. I mean.. i chased down a rattle about a month ago but that's about it.
maybe you can look on craigslist for recent donor cars that you can take these things off.. because it does make a quite a bit of a difference if you add 'em up.
I've got a gen 3 (92) and so far, only the door handles are an item that's shown to be prone to breakage.
Not one other part on the car has ever broken. Not one piece of interior plastic except for the door handles.
(Yeah, both inside and outside door handles break.) Not one piece of exterior plastic has ever broken, either.
My door armrests are showing some signs of vinyl shrinkage, but otherwise, everything's pretty much as
it was 16 years ago.
my car is prettymuch sold everything thast breaking on it was due to my own stupidity so it wasnt cheaply made, just you've ahd bad luck with some things like most of us do...

Wont lie the car sure is cheeply made, what do you expect of a economy car? My driver side hood joint just broke today and my door handle has broken as well. I have no idea how much the hood costs to fix but its prob not worth the effort. The way i see it, all the engine/trainsmission parts are good quaility, everything else is cheep.
I agree with Touringcamry, after having a Gen6 I can say that the Gen 4 it's way solid...
No problems at all(knocking on wood). My 98 has a way better ride and no rattles compare with my now sold 07 camry... But I think that after the year it all comes down on how the car was treated during the last 10 years..
It is cheaply made. So far the only things I've broken were:
1. Garage door remote holder hinge (tried replacing it with the sunglass holder and broke the hinge)
2. Broken hinge on the mirror cover for the sunvisor (I believe one of my friends broke that since they always seemed to slam it shut with excessive force while the cover is still open)
3. Broken mounting brace on cornerlight
As long as the things aren't forced/shut too hard, I think most of the parts should last. I always get pissed off when my friends slam things shut (the sunvisor, the middle storage compartment, the hood, and slamming the door shut on the seatbelt).
toyota spends more on the exterior and mechanical quality and less on the stuff that doesnt matter. that being said mines a 97 with near 180K miles on it and its in good shape. want to have your cake and eat it too, get a lexus.
It feels like maybe you or perhaps the last owner was being a little too rough on the car? This isn't a work truck. You'd be hard pressed to find a car where their handles don't break unless they are metal.
