Trouble starting up in the morning

My dad's '99 Camry has a little issue. With the hot weather recently, if we try to start the car after sitting overnight, it'll take several cranks to get it running. All the while, my dad has to press the gas pedal. It runs for like a second then dies (will verify this) so I'm thinking maybe clogged injectors? Maybe running a bottle of cleaner will help but I'm trying to see what else it could be, I know it might be a lot of components. Plugs were recently changed, by the way. Thanks!

I had a leaking injector do this once. It would allow air in overnight and the gas would drain back to the tank. Starting in the morning took a while since the pump had to get the gas all the way back up the the injectors. Every now and again I would smell gas just after shutting down and getting out of the car.

Ok, I found out that the idle is actually at like 500 RPMs, which is too low so that it starts to die, which is why he has to press the gas pedal. What is causing this?

Perhaps check out your IAC (Idle Air Control).

IAC is ur best bet- my mechanic who use to work for the yota dealership openned his own shop and he has a few things in a box that usually goes wrong - IAC was definetly one ov 'em.

happens to me a lot and keeps coming back every so often. but it happens more in the cold for me personally...

just get a cleaner and take off your intake and spray it in and clean it up a bit and it should be fine. better yet if you could completely take it off and clean it you would be in even better shape.

hmm

Might also check the fuel pressure regulator on the engines fuel rail. Pull the vacuum line from the reg if there is gas in this air line, replace the reg.

I will look at the IAC later, I've cleaned out the throttle body before with carb cleaner. Where is it located in the Camry Stuff guides?

Here is a thread on cleaning the throttle body. The square or diamond shaped hole in the base of the throttle body is the port that leads to the Idle Air Control Valve. Spray the cleaner liberally in to that hole and let it soak a while:

How to: Cleaning Throttle Body, Pictorial

I would also check the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor. It may be out of range and not telling the ECU (the computer) the proper engine temperature. This can result in the fuel mixture being off at varying temperatures. You will need a digital volt ohmeter and the specs from any manual to do this. You need to check this at varying temperatures and compare you readings to the chart in the manual.

I used to have the exact same problem with my 94 camry. It started during the winter so I thought it was the cold weather but once spring came and it would do it on warm mornings, I knew it couldn't be. Took the car to a shop and found out it was the Idle Air Control Valve. I believe it can either be cleaned or will need to be replaced. Once mine was cleaned..... no more pressing the gas pedal while trying to start up in the AM.
