is a steelie spare good enough ?

i didn't see this addressed in a search, and im not sure if its commonly understood common knowledge BUT ...

im going to upgrade the 14" doughnuts on my gen4 camry to 17 or 18 inchers ... would be unwise to drive a few (~ 5-10 ?) miles with one 14" wheel and three 18" wheels ? ... in the case of a flat tire ...

Of course it would be good enough, that's what it's there for.

is the circumference about the same between the two? if you are really worried, if you have to use the spare - use it on one of the back (non-power) wheels.

I have a 16" dounut in my mom's accord, so the ABS is not tricked. Also difference in tire diameter will affect Traction control and any AWD system.

since we dont really have to worry about AWD in this case, youd be fine. It would only be for a few miles anyway. One thing to look into is that a lot of times your aftermarket lugs are not compatible with your spare tire, so consider keeping your stock lugs in the trunk too. Or just drive around with no spare or jack like me

The Toyota supplied OEM alloy nuts have a bulge seat in addition to the washer/ flange on them, so it is usable on both.

Assuming you get the correct size tires for your 17/18" wheels, the wheel/tire package should be the same or nearly the same diameter as your 14" wheel/tire package, so you shouldn't have any problems. I wouldn't be doing a lot of high speed driving, but you can certainly get around until a flat is fixed.

Good point on the lug nuts. Make sure you carry ones that will work with the spare if your aftermarket lugs won't.

try lookin at junkyards for a 15" full spare as well. cheap and lasts longer. i had a blow out on a vacation and used the full size 15" spare for a week and it worked perfectly.

that will most likely depend on your wheel design, I know for sure there is no way the OEM lugs are going inside my gram lights...

yea i do have a full-size spare ... for the 14s that im going to upgrade.

as far as buying another wheel, i was afraid someone would mention that. from what i take from this thread, buying an additional spare wheel/tire is too expensive imo for the negligible benefit it will provide you ... each to their own though

thanks for the tips ... i'll make sure i test out the lug nuts
