4th Generation Perf options on Gen4 2000 Camry LE V6 (1MZ-FE)

Hi all,

I've read some differing opinions on Cold Air Intake for the 1MZ-FE: It's not a big improvement over the stock airbox ; You have to make your own custom CAI or use a universal kit ; The CPE CAI is the way to go (link):

http://www.cp-e.com/2017.html

Noting that some posts are older than others, is there a concensus on this sort of thing?

I guess my bigger question is:

If I have a 2000 Camry LE V6, and only have about 1 to 2K to spend, and I am interested in both mileage and small horsepower increases, what do those with more experience (meaning YOU) suggest?

I replaced the stock filter with a K&N, and I am considering new tires (the currently-used Toyo Eclipse tires that are siped make an annoying noise on certain pavement surfaces).

What else? Thanks much for any helpful advice you can pass along to a rookie.

Brian

if your determined to do this then teh CPE is the only one that gives any real gains. thats mostly due to the tuning bits it comes with. but for the price, im not sure its worth it. if you were gonna go further with the engine then id say otherwise. i think either a small custom one or a SRI would be fine for the sound and then either save the money or put it twards rims, trd lip kit or somthing.

Thanks BigBird.

I'm not huge into changing the look of my Camry just yet. That being said, do you think new rims are worth the expense? I was planning on just getting some nice tires for the stock rims.

im not voting because you left an option out ...

there are other companies that make intakes, and they arent terribly expensive

that option isnt custom, its not universal, and its not the kit

Thanks Venom.

Can you suggest a few manufacturers of CAIs that you feel would be great bang-for-buck on the 1MZ-FE?

you can just get a short ram intake then buy tubing from home depot to extend it. Or go on sg and buy damon's cai extension for like 50 bucks

AEM is one of my favorite brands ($140+) ... but most people think its not worth the money, and some people prefer SRIs (like me) in which case i would go with Weapon-R

depends on what you want from it ... DIYs never look as good, and i care about aesthetic value

if you've got 2K to spend...you can do a 5-speed swap....

Get a high flow drop in filter, take out the intake resonator.

Thanks MidnightMach. I put in a K&N drop in filter last week.

What pros/cons are there for removing the resonator?

resonator removal doesnt really make a big difference

the engine will seem somewhat louder, but it will be nothing compared to an aftermarket intake

It will make the engine a bit louder and you will get some cool air from the area where it was.

Keep in mind the stock intake is rubber/plastic and conducts much less heat than aluminum piping.

IMO i do not think there are any significant power gains from after market intakes other than top end power. Keep in mind the 1mz has a mid randge powerband and high rpm isnt where you want to be anyways.

I had a SRI on my corolla for 5 months and put back the stock intake. After doing so i had gained back noticable torque.
