3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My antenna goes about halfway up, then stops. It definitely makes radio reception worse, and I definitely need to fix this soon. It goes up and down no problem (just goes up halfway). I am looking around online and see a lot of antenna mast's.
Should I buy an entire new antenna or a new mast? Thanks guys!
JUST the mast. It's probably the most common issue on our cars. I replaced mine 2 times in 1 year a while back, lol. PepBoys sells a direct replacement for our car for $19.99 I think.

It may sound a little steep at first, but 1) it looks good and 2) you don' t have to worry about your antenna freezing up or down in the winter and 3) you don' t have to worry about your power antenna breaking any more.
I haven't experienced any degradation in reception and haven't seen anyone report on TN that they have either.
I WROTE the DIY and I;m the only one to experience a crappy signal, I swear....lol. ONLY with AM though. If you only listen to FM, it;s fine. If you listen to a lot of AM, it;s not a good idea. I ended up doing another custom antenna so I could get AM good.q

From taking apart a couple of the masts, what seems to happen is inside there's a rubber seal for each metal end of the antenna mast. What seems to happen is over the years, this rubber gets to the point it just binds, hence it won't go up all the way, or down all the way as the case may be, and obviously not something you can just take apart and fix.
For now looking at just putting a switch in to put it up only when I needed it for now. Down the road may do the S2000 mod. We'll see.
I did the S2K mod too, and I would say that my FM reception is pretty much the same and the AM is only slightly worse, but nothing of too much concern.

But the reasons as summed up above are more than enough to do it IMO

I lubed mine up, pulled it all the way out and unplugged the motor from inside the fender/trunk. Reception is as good as new and no more grinding/binding. Free "fix". I would like to replace the power antenna altogether as I did in my old acura but reception is a big concern to me..
Just wanted to add I replaced just the mast last year on my mom's gen 3.5. It was quick and now the antenna works again. I'm just sticking with the power antenna setup, it's the classic gen 3 look and it's cheap .

Mine is stuck in the up position, better than down (we are still talking antenna's). When I turn the radio on or off I can hear the motor trying to pull or push the antenna, but it just stays in the same position. I figure the gears are shot.
I do like that conversion and will have to consider that when I get the car back on the road.

Ours was like that for awhile before we got a new motor. You may as well just disconnect the motor and leave it in the up position if it's not working..
