3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey guys I'm doing some maintenance to my car and I'm curious what kind of oil do you guys recommend to use? I know it says 5W - 30 but what is a good one or the best one to use? I rather know what some of you guys use. Also does it matter really what radiator fluid I put in my radiator as well? I'm gonna put some radiator fluid from Prestone. But is it better for me to do the 50/50 or the other radiator fluid? Just curious to know which is better for me. My car is a 1994 Camry XLE V6 with 38008 miles as of now. Thanks guys.
I've been using Castrol GTX for years and have never had a problem in any of my vehicles. That's what my Toyota mechanic friend uses personally, and that's what they used for years at the Toyota dealership where he works. He told me the dealership recently switched to Mobil 1 (non-synthetic), because they were able to get a better deal for the current contract.
Antifreeze, I can't tell you about brands. I've always used Toyota brand in my Toyotas simply because that's what my mechanic friend uses. I understand that you can use other brands but have heard that you should NOT mix the Toyota red stuff with the aftermarket stuff. If you're going to change from Toyota brand to Prestone you should probably do a full radiator flush first.
kinda off topic, but it is good to switch from oil to oil...for example i've been using mobile 1 also but they were doing this great deal on castrol so i put in that instead...so does that do any harmful damage or any damage of any kind that you guys know of...
I have 318,100 miles and i use Castrol Synthetic Blend 5W30
Any questions?????????
thats what i use too!

from my instructor (master tech for toyota) said the manufacture suggested that what ever you use, you should stick to it.. damage wont occur now, but if you keep switch back and fourth, it'll catch up sooner or later...

It's best to pick one oil and stick with it. For the same reason you don't mix different oils. Different oils have different formulas. Additives in one oil may interfere with the lubricating ability of another oil.
