How do I change the ignition coil?

Hello,

I need to change the ignition coil of my 1994 Toyota Camry I4 5SFE (non California). Do I have to take the whole distributor assembly off to change the ignition coil or can I take it out after removing the distributor cap, rotor, and the dust cover only?

Thanks

The four mounting screws for the coil are on the bottom, so yes, you need to remove the distributor body (DB). Remember to mark the DB relative to the engine block. I like to use two match marks just to be sure. This way when you put the DB back on its in the same orientation as when you removed it so you don't have to re-time the engine. The engine block is aluminum so it is best to use a torque wrench when refastening the two bolts that hold the DB on. There is an o-ring between the DB and the engine block. This will probably be old and hard. Replacing it would be advised. Even though it only goes on one way, remember the orientation of the rotor so the DB goes on nice and easy. Be gentle with the wires to the DB and the coil. They are probably old and hard, easy to break the insulation.
