3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
i've seen some 'performance chips' on ebay that supposedly increase horsepower and miles to the gallon. My camry is a V6 so it has some decent power so I really could kinda care less about hp, but any gain in MPG is well worth the money IF it actually works. Not that my car is bad by any means, just well with gas at $4 i'm sure anyone would like a gain in MPG, whether you're getting 10 or 50 miles to the gallon already. I was just curious has anyone installed anything like this in their car, camry or not i'm just curious if any toyota owners on here have bought anything like this? and if so were you satisfied with the outcome?

I noted before that the market is going to be flooded with all kinds of gadgets and gimmicks. I know absolutely nothing about it, but I wouldn't waste my time and/or money. Fill up your tires, get a tune-up and avoid the quick take-offs. That alone would probably save you as much as these gimmicks claim. I wouldn't be surprised if the instructions note to fill up your tires, get a tune-up and avoid the quick take-offs in order to get maximum performance from their product.
yeah seemed a little too good to be true... kinda contradicting too isn't? gain in horsepower AND mpg???? maybe it's just me but i don't see how that could work.
i dont think its the resistor thing you (first poster) were talking about, supposedly its just something that like installs by the air filter or something and its suppose to give you maximum air flow or cooler temperature or some shit that somehow translates to greater overall performance and MPG. I'll get a link posted later if i get more responses, but i got a feeling you guys are right and it's 'buyer beware' and just b.s marketing scam cuz of soaring gas prices.

Don't fall for it, especially if it's cheap. It's most likely too good to be true. There's a saying that goes something like: cheap, horsepower, and quality can never be used in the same sentence.
The Camry is a car that I can rip out someone's pride, stab it, beat it, and completely bash their egos, and it's so ridiculous that the person comes back with a hysterical laugh... ROFL They got trainlengthed by a Camry that in their mind, was a 18 sec car.
Hp and mpg dont go together, especially not just by a single chip.
Gainning more power and still having good gas comsumtion meant efficency. Unless u have a honda with V-tec, I dont see how those craps they advertise make anysense.
Noted that there are some aftermarket chips that can actually "drain" out ur engine, "fooled" the carburetor and fuel injector to cause more hp, but again it will dip the mpg badly along with engine durability - natural inspired is the best.
Next time when u change oil, change the oil filter too, change tranny engine, change radiator fluid, change brake fluid ... Just ask the mechanic to do a full check tune up. Then drive to a Pepboy, pick up a cheap "fuel system cleaner" bottle, fill your tank up all the way and pour it in with it.
hp and mpg actually do go together, and quite often. Most cars run from the factory rich for emissions and safety purposes. When you mess with the tune and lean out the fuel delivery, you decrease the amount of fuel that is fed to the engine while increasing power.
