3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
What is this thing circled? I snagged this picture from the engine bay thread. I have a V6. I know mine is very empty in this area. I do not have one of these boxes with the silver wires running out the top.

My car doesn't have that? And it has 4 disc brakes...?
Then your car doesn't have ABS . It is an option on both Gen3 and Gen4. For example, my '97 5SFE has ABS, but my mom's '00 5SFE doesn't. She doesn't like ABS for some reason, she seems to prefer pumping the brakes like she had to back in the day before ABS.
Without ABS you're MUCH more likely to go into a skid when you slam on the brakes than with it. The ABS works so well on my Camry that I have yet to even hear a tire chirp from applying the brakes (but that could also be a result of worn brake lines).

The dash would very likely have the light regardless, although I also find it hard to believe a '94 XLE with discs all around wouldn't have ABS. Maybe it's just somewhere else in '94?

That's so I thought, they wouldn't slap an XLE tag on if it's not load with stuff.
My 94 has ABS, the 96 doesn't. Both 4 wheel disc. The only difference I notice is the 96 doesn't make all those ABS noises the 94 does when u crank it up and back out of the driveway

So? Even 2002 Camry SE has 4 wheel disc with optional ABS.
Not sure when it became standard, but all 2007 and newer Camry have 4 wheel disc brake with ABS. Kinda wish I have rear drums though just for better parking brake and longer service interval. My parking brake sucks even after adjustment.

Finally, someone who understands that rear disc brakes are not this perfect thing and drums are a terrible thing. The first rear disc brake car we had was a 1980 Supra. It wore out two sets of rear pads for each set of fronts. The parking brake adjustment was never right. Expensive cars, like BMW and Corvette, use a separate drum brake inside the rear disc hub just for a parking brake. That is an expensive duplication of parts. The BMW had 50/50 front/rear weight distribution, so rear discs made more sense.
For a nose-heavy front wheel drive sedan, like the Camry, rear drums are just fine. Our Tundra has rear drums combined with ABS. The old Ford and Chevy pickups were also front disc, rear drum with ABS (four wheel on the Ford, rear only on the Chevy) and it all worked great.
