3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I've searched for this, but I couldn't find an answer for Gen3 (gen4, yes)
Replacing the lights behind the AC controls...
I've removed the lower trim around the storage bin and radio, popped off the knobs and slider, and removed the one screw under the left knob.
What else? Do I need to remove the entire black trim around the gauges? It looks like the trim that has the AC control markings on it is actually behind this big piece.
If your car is anything like mine, it will be difficult to replace. My HVAC is a bit different. I have knobs for the temp, fan speed, but the vent directing is all controlled electronically by buttons. If you need to remove this unit, you will need to take out your tape/cd deck since the wire that connects in the rear is hard to get to if you do not remove that!

Not true. I have the XLE with the dial and push buttons. It's not at all hard to remove. After you remove the bottom panel that goes around the bottom of the radio, you need to remove the black trim piece that goes around the HVAC controls and instrument cluster. There are 2 screws in front of the instrument cluster up top and 2 screws below the HVAC controls, 1 on each side. Pull the black piece out and of the way. Then remove the 4 bolts that hold the HVAC controls on and remove the screw in the middle of the temperature control knob. Then pull the controls out and disconnect the wires on the back. You will see the bulbs on the backside of the HVAC controls.

^ i'll have to check it again. I couldn't find a way to remove that. Did you unplug the whole unit and removed it or did you just the 2 screws on the left and right???

hmm...strange. There are 4 screws holding it in and 1 screw in the middle of the temperature control knob. Then you just pull it away from the dash slightly and disconnect the 3 plugs on the back.
