3rd Generation Check Engine Light comes on (P0770)

Got a new tranny about a yr ago witha LIFETIME Guarntee . Ever since than I noticed that my check engine comes on. Brought the car to Autozone and the code P0770 showed up. Is this code a tranny code or an engine code. Is the tranny place liable for this code showing up?

I did bring it to the tranny shop they made me purchase a new computer for $225 and the light was off for about 10 miles than came back on. Is it the trany that needs work done to it or the engine? The guy told me in the tranny shop that my engine wil go very soon . Its a 96 Camry 2.2liter with 162,757 miles on it.

As Eye8 states this is a trans solenoid code. Solenoid SL or E as Toyota calls it. The computer is listed as a possible cause but computers rarely fail, and now you have a replacement.

This leaves the trans and trans wiring as the only issues. The solenoid can be tested without removing the trans for the car, as the computer can.

The shop may be trying to get you to go away. If competent they should be able to determine the problem and fix it.

Take it back and complain. Did you use a credit card? As the trans has a life time warranty if they can't fix it or try to charge for what now seems to be a trans problem stop payment on the card.

Why does the shop think the engine is failing.

In the future it would be best to check out the CEL ASAP.

the shop is trying to screw you

now that you have a new ecu and it's definitely not that, they'll have to deal with it themselves and fix it. The shop manual goes through a number of different procedures for testing the solenoid without taking it out. and even if they had to physically remove it and check it or replace it, all they have to do is drop the pan, so it's not very hard for them

If I bring it back to the shop. What should I tell the guy? What should he do to fix the problem?

tell him that you have the code and for him to fix it

if he's lucky, he can just change the solenoid. if not, there could be wiring issues. and if not, he may have to change the ecu.

but he'd better know that, since he does this stuff and gives it a lifetime warranty
