labor is what will kill ya. the tranny you can pick up at a junkyard or a bunch of other places. all and all to completly replace the tranny id say about 700 in parts depending on how ya source parts. teh labor would be near a grand right there at least.

also, this is a good time to consider swaping to an manual if ya dont already have one.

oh and welcome to TN

Could you describe noise?, or is it a hard thump?

Sometimes it may be an engine/transmission mount that has been damaged. Have you checked the CV boots as well?

My wife's Mazda did a tremendous thump that jolted the whole car when shifted into reverse, which turned out to be broken pinion gear in Transmission.
Used Transmission was 550 $CDN and Labour was around 1300 $CDN last year including taxes

i have to have the ebrake pulled. because in park you still can spin the front wheels. then when we started the car today it was smoking from the exhaust. and it has only been sitting for two days. but i think it always smokes. but we dont notice because it is parked outside.

My transmission makes some noises when I put it in gear. It drives fine though.

Has the trans fluid and filter been changed?

Did the Gear select switch been looked at to see that it is indicating the proper gear?
