USA Check Engine Code Help

Hello all.

I have a 94 Camry LE 2.2L. The check engine light is on and through some web surfing I was able to figure out how to retrieve the code for the problem. I was looking through your forum and came across a post from 2006. The solution provided by toyomoho below is, I believe, what I am looking for, I think. However, I have a few questions about the possible solution.

1st ? / What do all the accronyms mean?
ECU?
NE signal?
G signal?
DTC?
TDC?

2nd ? / The author, toyomoho, goes on to discuss checking resistance, I.E. G to G, NE to G. Does anyone have a diagram of the terminal layout the author is mentioning?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

The code is set if the ECU does not receive a NE signal for 2 seconds. Or a G signal for 3 seconds with RPM between 600 and 4K.

The distributor has two signal rotors. One sends out a G signal representing the standard crank position. Assume this is No 1 cylinder DTC. The other rotor sends out a signal representing crank position. Assume this is each cylinders TDC. The inputs from both signals allow the ECU to control timing.

Might check the following resistance:
G to G-- = 140-180 ohm
NE to G-- = same as above

When looking at the front of the electrical plug for the distributor, with the plug lock down. The terminal layout is G and NE on top (left to right), G-- (in lower right corner of plug).

The air gap between rotor and pick up coils should be 0.008 inch (0.2mm).

Check for loose or disconnected wires between the distributor and ECU. Coil primary resistance 0.41-0.50 ohm cold, secondary 10.2-13.8 ohm cold. Ignition wire resistance should be 25K ohm per wire.

ECU = Electronic Control Unit AKA computer

NE signal = A signal from the distributor that informs the ECU of crankshaft position and RPM.

G signal = Ditto but for the camshaft position.

DTC = Dead Top Center-Piston at the exact top of stroke.

TDC = Top Dead Center (same as above).

If you look at the front of distributor where the electrical socket plug is the terminals are as follows left to right: G, G2, G1, NE

If a 1994 the ohm readings are different then above.

Alright, given that the error code is 12 and toyomoho's explaination from above there are 2 possibilities. Crankshaft position sensor is faulty or Camshaft position sensor is faulty.

Toyomoho,

Do you have the electrical parameters for testing these sensors, does anyone? If not were can I obtain this information.

Thanks again in advance.

I Have the same problem and i really need help. My camry was throwing a code 12 no signal to ecu from ne or g. I replaced the distributor, set the timing mark to 0 tdc and put the distributor in. I still have code 12 and still no spark. My 5sfe hasnt ran in over three months. It just died while driving 25mph.I bought a new coil before i bought the distributor, still no spark. I think my plugs have been fouled out because of all the cranking, but the spark plugs wouldnt give the code 12. I clear the codes and begin to crank and the code 12 comes right back.HOW DO I CHECK FOR A SHORT OR OPEN CIRCUIT FROM DISTRIBUTOR
TO ECU. If there is no short do I need a reman ecu. Please help 985-758-5188 or aaronv504@bellsouth.net ,will pay for help.

aaronv94le,

I suggest you go over to the Camry forum at AutomotiveForums.com. At the top of that forum there are Toyota factory service manuals that are available for free downloading. Download the generation 3 manual. I believe it is actually a 94 Camry manual. It should give you tests for that code.

Good luck.

Mike

aaronv94le,

I incorrectly stated to download the generation 4 service manual, when I should have said generation 3. I must have been thinking if the 4 in 94. I corrected my post above, but I wanted to make additional post to make sure you get the correct information. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused.

Mike
