3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
hey. last sunday, i spent the day at a rally track. after about 4 hours of driving, the car started to overheat. so i sat out for about an hour, let it cool down, and then drove home. the car started overheating again as a was nearing my house. btw, its an hour drive from the tracks to my house. so the next morning, i opened to the radiator cap to check the coolant. the radiator blew all this orange/rust colored crap everywhere, after it had been cooling all night...
both the radiator and the overflow tank were full of this semi-liquid rust colored stuff. so i immediately flushed and cleaned out everything. filled it with fresh coolant, drove around for a bit, seemed like everything was fine. the next day, it started overheating again. the radiator and the tank were full of this crap again!!! some people said that my radiator was gone, so i both a new one, cleaned everything up, replaced the radiator. last night, it started overheating AGAIN!!! this morning, the new radiator is full of the rust crap again!!!!!!!!!!! i have no idea whats wrong, and whats going on. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. btw, its a 95 camry dx 2.2 auto.
Simple, you did the repair half assed. Change your thermostate too, and fill it with distilled water (if over 32F). Drive it, and drain it. And do this a coupe times till the water is CLEAN, and make sure to have the temp on the climate controls turned to hot, to circulate it through that as well.

Ok, did you flush it with the car running, or off? Also, with the amount of rust, it likely settled through the entire cooling system.
Also, the best thing I can say, is to go to the Auto Store and get a bottle of Radiator/cooling system flush, and run that, as per the directions on the bottle. That will clean the cooling system out a LOT better then you can with just water.

The engine coolant passages are rusted. A flush will get some of this but as you found it comes back.
Try picking up something that will do a chemical flush of the system. Suggest reinstalling the old radiator (if you still have it). Once the "stuff" in the system breaks free it can plug the radiator tubes, the result even worse over heating.
Prestone I know makes a couple things. It would be with the radiator fix products, and is in a small yellow bottle that looks like a mini antifreez bottle. But use DISTILLED water, NOT tap water. they sell 1g or 2.5g jugs at most supermarkets, and usually about 99c a gallon.
