98 2.2L: Which tranny fluid? DIY?

I've searched, but couldn't find much relevant info.

I need to flush and refill the tranny fluid in my 98 4cyl.

1) What kind of ATF does Toyota use? Dexron III?

2) Cheapest place to get the AT filter kit?

3) DIY link?

Thanks in advanced.

1. If you read your owner's manual, it'll probably say it's Dexron II, but III is also backward compatible.

2. Don't know what filter kit you're asking for. For drain and refill is just simply that.

3. Get a Haynes manual.

I did a flush at home a few weeks ago. Check my post for instructions. I did not change any filters - did not want to bother with dropping the pan...

I'm not sure if you want to put synthetic fluid in your '98, especially if you have a lot of miles on it - some folks have experienced leaks on older cars when switching to synthetic. On mine, so far no issues, but again I've had drained and refilled with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF twice before I did the flush at about 76K miles.

Check these two links:

My previous post does not mention it, but when the tranny fluid was in the middle between the hot and cold mark after I refilled, it turned-out that the level was actually right on when the tranny warmed-up. So, when you refill, do not overfill, until you get a chance to measure when the tranny is warmed-up.

Last thing, replace your differential fluid as well, if you haven't. Mine was quite dirty the first time I did it at about 30-35K. The differential fluid is separate from the tranny fluid.
