Failed California Smog check: 93 v6 camry

car= v6 camry 3.0 auto

i just failed the california smog test:

1) failed: fuel evaporative contols

does it mean i need a new charcoal canister?

2) failed: 15mph HC max=84 measured=149
25mph HC max=49 measured=99

3) failed: 15mph CO max=.49 measured=.92
25mph CO max=.46 measured=.9

so there come the random question for you all gurus:

1)will using different octane grade help? 91 vs 87?

2)is there magic addictive for HC and CO number? those little package sells in autozone, etc?

3)perhaps new cat?

thanks, feel free to correct me

Any CEL's?

The magic thing here seems to be "SeaFoam". Several people have used it and them passed emissions. Many here use it just as normal maintmence.

Well, from my own experience, as well as others here, it has done a wide range of things. The best way to use it is to have a warm engine, suck 1/3 of the can slowly through the brake booster line (It sucks it into the intake), and immediatly shut the engine off, and then restart after 15 minutes and drive a few miles. What it does is eat up the carbon in the engine, so that it will run more efficiant and cleaner.

I did not notice any difference on my car. But I did ti on my Nana's '95 Corolla, and she one day told me that after I touched her car, the gas needle goes down slower . Some other people on here have said the same thing about better gas mileage, and a much smoother running engine. It;s $6 for a can, so ity;s worth a try. Without the CEL on, it;s hard to pinpoint exactly what the issue is. I usually go the cheapest route 1st.

I'll be honest, I;m not too good on the stuff you specifically mentioned though, so hopefully someone else here can chime in that may have a better idea for you as well.

How was the 02 and other readings.

The engine appears to be running rich. If the CAT the NOx would be high.

What did they test to determine the fuel evaporator controls, the gas cap?

find a no pass no pay place, its the same price (at least here in norcal) and i took my toy van close to 7 times until it passed

try retarding the timing so it barely runs, that always does the trick for me.
