3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
So i'm kinda strapped on cash and am looking to buy a gen 3 1mz-fe car (maybe a 3vz-fe if i can find a good car). Anyways i wanna check the car for engine sludge before i buy it. I know how to remove the valve cover on the 5s-fe but not on the 1mz-fe. What size sockets and tools do i need? Also can i just remove the front 3 cyl's valve cover or all 6 connected.
P.S. any other advice on how to look for a good condition 1mz-fe would be appricated.

yes you can remove just the front bank V/C without removing the other or the plenum. i believe its 10mm for the bolts around the V/C and the same for much of the little components around it. but a set of metric sockets an extension and some screwdrivers will do the job.
as for shoppin advice, id say look for the sludge, check the carfax and see if there are maintainance records the seller has avalible. look for leaks after teast driving it, especially if the engine looks like it has been cleaned.
btw its a Valve Cover, not a Value Cover ... just fyi
yes its valVe cover... but dont be a jerk. take the time wasted on picking on people and go have that rear center panel painted and get some hubcaps...
if we need someone to moderate people's typos like "body kit" instead of "lip kit" and "value cover" instead of "valve cover" we will let you know lenny... thanks
And yes, the front cover is easily removed. very straightforward.
If you are going to remove valve covers when shopping for a car, be prepared to replace the gasket for them. If you were looking at my car and wanted to remove it, Id make you replace it.

i have hubcaps, and that rear panel looks terrible - take some time to check the boards, and you would know both that i have sets of hubcaps and several real center panels
i was never being a jerk, i said it quite plain

thank you for supporting the lack of education in america In 2006-

27% had Bachelor's Degree or higher
there is no harm in correcting things

not quite ... just making sure you dont start wondering why you cant find a "value cover" in a maintenance manual ... you might end up finding this:
lol

are you saying the panel that i photoshopped looks terrible? it actually looks exactly the same as what a 95-96 rear panel should look like without emblems. if you are saying the panel in your sig looks terrible, im in total agreement.
why wouldnt you use one of those sets of hubcaps on your awesome stock wheels?
i guess my point is why make a signature picture that makes your car look bad?
yes you were being a jerk. nobody who has any automotive knowledge at all would use the term VALUE COVER. he just has a problem with his keyboard...
why should i "take the time to check the boards" to find out anything about your camry?
i'd rather use toyota nation for its purpose of obtaining information and spreading factual information about toyota maintenance and modifications. while at the same time adding to the personal aspect of the community.
I did do some checking up on your posting... it seems that most of them are cocky contridictions of other people. I guess you have a lot to say with that many posts after being a member since only last year... Another long time member recently told me that you were banned at one point for "being an idiot." I can see that...
if you continue being a smartass around toyotanation, nobody will respect a word you say. and whats the point of being on this board if nobody respects your words?
and you should search the boards to see info about my car if you are going to come into some thread and start talking shit about it - dont talk about what you dont know about it, and this isnt a Show & Share thread about my car, so your opinion was never requested
the information i post is read by people who need to see it, and if others dont respect it then thats their loss - ive made plenty of helpful posts in my time here
who are you to say my intentions? he called it a "value" cover multiple times, so i figure that if he knew it was "valve" then maybe once it wouldve been a mistake, but usually when someone repeats the wrong thing, they dont know better ... so i let him know, just in case he wasnt just missing the "v" key
being a jerk wouldve been me saying "its valve cover, dumbass - learn to spell"

I hope they don't take your "information" too seriously... I know i won't.
Good luck on finding your v6 camry Albuynp! (Suppose I should actually address the thread topic, cause i have a sense this thread will be locked at some point...)
I'd just look for something that was taken care of with some evidence. When we found one for my brother, the guy selling it was a business man who used it on the highway. It has a lot of miles, but everything was well taken care of, and the needed parts were all replaced. records were kept and he presented all of those service records when we checked the car out.
And lenny, take into consideration what we are saying here. A TYPO has NOTHING to do with education stats in America, and I frankly dont care. If you are that concerned, start giving typing classes to needy kids or something- dont preach to car enthusiasts trying to get a simple answer to a simple question.
