USA horn honks when pressing the cruise control button

Hi,

I got a 1995 Camry where the horn honks when I press the cruise control button on OR if I honk the horn on the steering wheel then the cruise control lights up on the dashboard. To turn off the cruise control light, I have to honk the horn again. Sometimes, when I try to honk the horn by pressing the center of the steering wheel then the horn does not honk.

(BTW the cruise control speed cannot be set any more since this issue started to occur)

From reading the Haynes manual, it appears that there is one connector to both of these under the steering wheel. Maybe there is some kind of dirty switch somewhere. I am thinking that Armor all liquid may have gotten in to the steering wheel and gunked up something. Maybe pulling off the steering wheel and cleaning the wire connector and/or horn contacts might fix the problem ? Anybody seen this before ?

when I was modifying my steering wheel controls for my '05, i had pulled the cruise control/horn connector. neither worked while the connector was disconnected... probably very similar to your situation. i did not have to pull the steering wheel to access the connector, just the airbag... it may be the same for your '95. clean the contacts and make sure nothing is shorting out.

thanks for the info. In my case, the horn works so the contacts might be dirty. I am going to pull off the steering wheel anyways since I am trying to fix another problem where the a/c center vents do not work. I pulled a lot of the front components of my dashboard to get to the dampers.

Sorry I have no help, but it reminds me of that video where a bunch of guys wired their friend's horn to the brakes and brake lights to the horn.

Yeah, it could be a bad relay or maybe a bad ground due to rust. I will start off by cleaning the switch for the horn once I pull off the steering wheel and then go from there.

I will let you all know what I find out. I got another thread for an a/c problem where I am attempting to remove the whole dash. Since I am popping off the steering wheel, I thought I might as well see what the horn issue is.

I got my horn problem fixed. What I did was I pulled off the steering wheel and cleaned all 4 of the horn contacts by pulling 400 grit sand paper thru them. That did the trick. Apparently rust was causing all of the problems.
