3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Was run off the road today & sent into a curb at about 50 mph, by some asshole who didn't bother to stop. Everyone around did to see if me and my lil bro were okay, but not the cocksucker.
Anyway, 3 bent rims, front struts are fucked. Retarted tires plus quoted $600 for the struts, but i'm thinking that is beyond steep. Is now the time to get new custom struts(and poss springs?)
I seek the guidance of this groovy community in this matter.
If anyone sees a green xtra cab older nissan with a central american driving it, feel free to yank him out and beat his ass.
Would love to hear Venom or Eye8 have to say on this, as their knowledge of these vehicles seems encyclopedic and oracle-esque.

Damn, sorry about the accident. Glad you're okay, I would be driving around finding that idiot.
I would go aftermarket for struts and springs. I'll buying tokico struts and h&r springs, trd rsb and a bunch of other suspension parts to replace my suspension. Total cost for parts are around $1.2k currently and thats installing it myself. So you'll save a big chunk if you do have time to install, it isn't that hard, just following directions from the haynes manual.
Appreciate it man.. anything non-essential may sadly have to wait depending on the cost, would love to redo the whole thing since it's being thrust upon me, but I just dunno right now, still wrapping my noggin around the whole business.
Do the springs and struts. Since you have bent rims and retard tires now, throw on a set of 17in rims and tires from tirerack and you are good to go as long as you didn't break anything other stuff like control arms and stuff.
Well, if you're planning to do the suspension and wheels eventually, now would be a good time. Otherwise, as cool as performance wheels and lowered suspension looks, it's really hellish on the car. Every angle on your Camry was precisely calculated for straight tracking, a decent ride, and tire life.
Wide wheels will screw with stresses on the spindle, scrub radius, and other such angles. Lowering springs will slightly affect camber, caster, and your ability to clear speed bumps. And you pay extra money for all this, and more money when you have to replace the more expensive tires twice as often because they will never wear right.
If I were you, i'd get monroe sensa-trac struts from napa or autozone, check for other bent parts, and get wheels out of a junkyard. You could even try bending the wheels back. If it's not to where it's bend the drop-center too much, either an adjustable wrench or some vice grips and elbow grease may get them acceptable again. Just watch them on the balancer to make sure they're not warped to where they'll shake your bearings apart.
Of course, that's if your only goal is to get the thing rolling again the way it was. That's what i'd do. I'd spend the rest of that great wad of camry-modifying cash on a pistol for the central american in the nissan extended cab...

147k miles and running out of things to fix...
These are the words of reason I needed to hear my friend. I pulled over in a parking lot a little down the way and was mobbed by these guys literally pouring out of this bush thinking i was looking for day labor. Added to my frustration a little haha.
I just need to bring it back to stock for now, until I pay down some debt, then maybe I can do all these other affectations.
Well I woke up and i guess the incident wasn't some nightmare.
Happy Fathers Day to all ze dads and stuff.
I was looking for the strut thread I had seen previous so apologize if I'm doubleing up on questions, but can someone reccomend a decent, but not outrageous strut brand? Some people say sensatrac, others have coronaries at the mention of them.. what to do?

aftermarket struts will be cheaper then toyota OEM ones, so id go that rout. if your lookin for a semi stock ride then the KYB GR2s are a good choice. if ya want somthing a little stiffer there are tokicos but thoes are more performance then ull need unless ya get performance springs too. monroe's are ok...ive had them on a couple cars and was not to excited by them...but they are cheap and provide a cumphy ride.
Turns out the struts are fine, massive backtracking. Won't be investigating this tires plus again. Had a good experience, but trying to sell me all that mess, even though it's their job rubbed me the wrong way. Bout time to do the struts anyway due to mileage, but just not this week. Will be looking at springs and struts and some not too fancy 17"s by years end.
2 tires and 3 new wheels and it should be back up. Going to check a couple yards this week if I can. Totally enjoying driving my old Volvo 240 this week though, fun little car.
Thanks to everyone for the advice!
