Running RICH LEAN MORE AIR LESS AIR ~ oh so confusing

Hey guys I am so confused about fuel mixtures and AF ratios.

Running Rich = not enough air, un brunt fuel

Lean= too much air

My problem is that when i start my car i notice the smell of gas at the exhaust. I verified that there are no fuel leaks. Doesnt this usually indicate a rich mixture?

I recently added a cone filter setup. Then did the AFM mod mentioned here.

But i'm confused according that post we lean the mixture my rotating the cog clockwise. This has a tightening effect on the AFM valve. That means less air will enter.

How is this leaning out the car....oh so very confused.

Help me out guys.

( I'll check out my plugs tomorrow to check if they are the culprit for the gas smell)

There are a lot more AFMs on the GEN 2s. You might put a post on that forum. They might have more input.

Meanwhile, (AFTER marking the original tooth on the AFM gear, you want to be able to revert to factory spec) why not adjust the AFM the other way and see if it corrects the problem.

uh ... less air = rich ... if you are closing the valve that lets less air in, youre not leaning it out

ive never seen a 3VZ, so idk how the AFM is setup ... but make sure its doing what you actually think its doing

The AFM is not restricting the flow of air into the engine at all. By tightening the spring it is harder to open the afm and so it will MEASURE less air coming in, the ecu sees less air coming in and doesn't know to add more fuel.
