3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
It might sound like a complete lie and I can't believe it myself but last week I topped off my tank for the first time ever so I could accurately get an indication of what type of gas mileage I am getting.
I just filled up and it took 12.197 gallons. I went to the same gas station and used the same pump. Since last fill up I have driven 478.3 miles.
That calculates out to 39.2 MPG.
My car is a 2000 camry, 5 speed, 2.2 5SFE, and my commute is all highway, 36 miles each way to and from work each day on flat roads. That commute consists of only about 3-4 complete stops on average. I drive between 65-70mpg and I will admit I drive like an old person, I accellerate slowly and the car never sees over 3k rpm. Is this normal gas mileage for this type of driving and this car???
I'm gonna continue to verify the mileage each week from now on to see how consistent the car is. Any thoughts?
Could be very possible to see that kind of gas mileage. The 5 speed really works in your favor, as does all highway driving. I have darn near touched 40 mpg, but it was because I was stuck doing a tremendous amount of 55mph driving through construction a few years back. I have never been close since! lol
One thing is the gas might have recently changed to summer blend in your area. But I'd say that kind of mpg is better than 90% of Camry owners!

I'm jealous. I think the most I've gotten was 30 MPG highway. Sounds like your car is in tip top shape to get that kind of fuel economy
lol...in hawaii, our highways are like...so short.
Gosh...I don't know what my worst MPG I got for my Gen1 with the tranny in Manuel mode (I'm assuming a bad ground cable). Let's just say 230miles till light came on from full. Lucky I got it to work and finally shift and act right.

Still...478.3 miles on a tank....DANG IMPRESSIVE!
That's not even a full tank's worth of driving. When I filled up tonight it only took 12.197 gallons, and I still had just over 1/4 tank before I filled up. Last week when I filled up it took 14.609 Gallons, but I was below 1/8 tank then. So I think Gen 3 camrys have a 16 gallon tank? Is that right? So I actually could have gone about another 90 miles, or about 570 miles safely without running out of gas.
anyway, one thing I should mention is that I DO NOT use my A/C. I'm sure that helps out some. The car has 130k miles, and since I've had it I've changed the plugs, air filter, timing belt, oil changes every 3k miles 10w30, fuel filter, PCV Valve, and that's it. It actually still has the original spark plug wires but I plan to change them soon.

I believe you 100%. In the early spring, I changed my air filter, plugs (NGK BKR6EP11), wires, cap, rotor. both O2 sensors, PVC valve and the ECT sensor. All of these were OEM Toyota parts. I use syn oil and OEM oil filters. I have an a/t but was able to get 34 MPG without A/C on a trip that was nearly all freeway. I was shocked but pleasedI have checked mine several times, same station, same pump and still the same mileage.

BTW, how can you do without A/C in AZ?
I totally know what it means to get great MPG, people here in Ga hate it when I start to talk about my 48 MPG on the highway, and my 38 MPG in the city.... especially since most of the ppl here drive large trucks and SUVs.
Take advantage of the superior Toyota engineering and expand the brand!

I saw around that the Gen4 has 18.5gal I believe
Yep. A/C really plays a role. My 2007 Versa runs around 330miles when the light goes on and fills up about 10.5 gals. I also do not use A/C at all (even when I was sick with fever). Not bad considering hawaii is mostly stop and go. A/C drains the gas fast...especially when your driving in city with it blasting.
One question I have, does running the A/C colder use up more gas than slightly warmer settings?
That seems very possible, and would not surprise me. Sounds like the drive is everything you need to achieve top MPG. Flat road, check. All highway, check. 5-speed, check. Drives the car easy, check. Honestly, I;m not at all surprised. Some of the Automatic guys here have hit the mid 30's range I think, and I doubt it;s with as good of driving conditions as you have. Hell, I once hit 30mpg in my V6 Auto going 75mph. But yes, it was mostly flat all highway driving.

It's not that bad. It was about 109 yesterday and it doesn't get much worse than that. My previous 4 cars did not have working a/c so I've gotten used to it over the years.

Well I guess that it is not the heat but the humidity. Here in NC it is 90 dgs. & 85% hum. and it is like a wet sauna outside.
My aunt used to live in NM and she did not have A/C in her house , but she had some kind of unit on the roof that circulated water. She called it a Swamp something.

LOL. i know what you mean man. I fill up roughly 10 gallons. And that fill up usually gets me around 250-260 miles if i play my cards right. i do mostly city driving -- stop and go. fyi, i have a Gen 4
