Starting issues, more help please!!!

Submitted a post a few days back about 96 Camry 2.2 not wanting to start after it has been driven for awhile. I cleaned the throttle body but still had same issues. Replies back were possible egr or vsv. Yesterday I tried to start after a warm up but would not fire. I pulled the largest black vacuum line off the top of the throttle body and the car started right up. If I put it back on after starting the engine would die. Take it off, and it would start. The vacuum diagram on the hood shows this line going to the vacuum switching valve. Could this be the problem, or are there more issues that need to be looked at? Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Did you try seafoaming the vacuum line??? Since it is vacuum related try it and see what happens. All it takes is 30 mins. 2mins to suck up 1/3 of seafoam, 15 to let it sit while the engine is off, then drive around for a bit clean it out!

I am uncertain which vacuum line you are describing. The largest hose on the throttle body that I can think of is the one on the passenger side leading to the brake booster. Is that the one? Removing this would affect all of the vacuum sensors and signals. The EGR would definitely be one of these. The problem is that this “solution” affects so many combinations of signals.

Do you have a Californian or standard Camry. Californian VSV controls EGR and Fuel pressure. I believe that the standard 5SFE VSV controls just the EGR. It's easy to test the VSV but difficult to access it. You can check the EGR much easier and if it is operating correctly then you can suspect the VSV. A T fitting and a vacuum gauge are very helpful to see what is actually going on.

Another sensor that may be involved in your problem is the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor (ECT). Though I am uncertain why a vacuum reduction would over-ride a failing ECT. You can check this with a digital multi-meter.

I can't say that I have ever discouraged a Sea Foam treatment.

starting isues, vacuum line

Kep,

Sorry, I should have described it better. The line I pulled off was the largest of the 3 that connect to the top right side of the throttle body. The other end of this larger line runs back towards the left front strut area and connects to a part that has an electrical connector to it. There is another line off this part that runs down to a small barrel that looks like a gas filter. The other 2 lines on the throttle body are smaller and go back to the egr vacuum modulator. Maybe this gives you a better idea of what I am describing. Thanks for any further advice.

You have me out of my league here. I am also confused with your left and right. Please use passenger side and driver side. From what I have learned, the throttle body has 4 vacuum lines on the driver side. Two go to the EGR Modulator, one goes to the TVV and one goes to the PCV valve. (There is a fifth near the group of three tubes, going to the Throttle Opener, but the manual doesn’t appear to associate it with the throttle body.) I don’t know for sure but I thought the biggest was the PCV hose. However, as far as I have determined, none have any electrical connections. The TVV does have a hose to the evap canister (which might resemble a fuel filter?). The Throttle Position Sensor is attached to the throttle body and (I believe) has that fifth vacuum line (above) connected to it. The TPS does have an electrical connection which would have a direct affect on the engine performance.

Research the items above in a repair manual and figure out which one you are trying to describe. You can use the search function in a pdf document very effectively. At the moment, my bet is on the TPS.

Luck,
Kep
