Have you checked your clutch fluid? could mean you got a leak in the line, master cyl, or slave cyl

Like the other fellow said it could still be your hydraulic clutch. Since it is still holding fluid, maybe you should double check the clutch pedal operation, i would crawl under the car and have someone push the pedal while watching the clutch lever at the transmission for movement.
If the clutch pedal seems ok, you could need a new pressure plate. (I had the same thing as you describe happen on another car, the pedal worked the clutch fine but did not activate the clutch. It turned out the pressure plate was kaput.) In other words, you might need a new clutch (includes pressure plate, clutch disk and throwout bearing and the pilot bearing replaced).
If you have a whole lot of miles on this clutch or just dont know when it was last changed, this is likely to be the problem, if you are not sure, have it checked at a shop.

Heres what the parts look like if you are not familiar with a clutch. If you have it done its about $400- 500. Do it yourself and the parts are about $200

The pedal stays on the floor because there is a spring under compression on the clutch pedal that helps push the pedal to the floor. If there are no visible leaks from the slave cylinder, the clutch master cylinder on the firewall likely has an internal leak. I've replaced the clutch master cylinder twice. Seems like it fails every 80K miles for me. The cost is about $110 at the dealer. You can get it cheaper elsewhere if you are willing to wait.

check both your master and slave clutch cylinders

if you're lucky, it's your slave and that's easily replaced on the front of the tranny

if it's the master, then it's a bit more work, but not that bad

The master cylinder appears to have 2 studs through the firewall.. One is easy to remove, so far I cannot even see the other to remove.. Does the dash need to be removed??

Thank you for all the help so far.....

nope...basically the two studs go through the firewall and into your clutch pedal bracket...so look on that bracket and you'll find the other nut

Use a socket/ratchet with a 3"-4" extension. It's tough to see the nut from below. You'll have to feel for it.

I am having the same problem right now. I press the clutch & it does not return. I have been told a couple things;
1-the clutch hydraulic needs to be replaced (to replace both the clutch master & the slave cylinder)
2-just replace the slave cylinder
3-check for low fluid level-which I have-fluid is full
4-now I see the pressure plate mentioned.
I have a 2000 Tacoma truck. In your opinion, what is the best & least expensive way to remedy this?

Someone correct me if I am wrong. If the slave cylinder does not hold hydraulic pressure, it will leak externally. If there are no external leaks then the master cylinder is likely bad.

More than likely it's either the master or slave cylinders. If you see no leakage, then it's probably internally worn and fluid is going past the 'plunger' inside the unit. You can buy rebuild kits for both for very little money, or replace the whole unit.

We replaced the master & the slave & it works! Thanks for your imput!
Doing it ourselves saved a buttload of money...not sure exactly what the dealership would have charged, they never returned my call for estimate quotes, but it certainly would have been a LOT more.
Thanks again!
