3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
And for the heck of it...here's a pic of the whole car.
Alrighty then...anyways I ordered this generic(the exact brand is A-Spec...) short ram intake off Ebay last Thursday...to my surprise, it showed up on my doorstep today. I was thinking it would take a lot longer. Took the stock airbox out, stuck this in...first place I didn't think it would fit. Turns out it does, but if the pipe would have been another half centimeter, it definitely wouldn't have fit. It's pretty crammed in there now.
What can I say....it sounds good...when you step on it. Low-end torque took a hit, as I heard it would from other people, but I think you might gain a bit in the higher end. Once you get going it sounds and pulls great.
I do have a question though..in picture number two, especially, you can see that little blue hose going from the pipe? I just have that going from the pipe to a random bolt so there's no air getting in. I have no idea where this goes, as there is no similar hose attached to the stock setup. Do I need that attached to anything?
Thanks guys. Comments welcome
(And yeah, I know, it looks pretty out of place in that engine bay. Haha. Oh well, I'm glad it's blue )

that hose is for OBD-II cars ... you dont need it - is your IAT sensor plugged in on the bottom tho?
thats a weird place for the mounting bracket - i dont think ive seen that before ... its usually mounted below, where the holes are left from the bottom half of the stock airbox - that way the intake cant move up/down much - but theres nothing wrong with how you did it, its just different
oh, and its only almost too big because that filter is huge

Yeah, I was thinking it made more sense to mount it where the old screws went in as well. However the bracket they gave wasn't anywhere near long enough. So I just improvised and did it that way...doesn't seem to move very much.
As for the IAT sensor...I'm not sure what you mean. I didn't unplug anything from the stock setup...and didn't really plug anything in when I installed the short ram. Can you explain this IAT sensor to me?
Thanks.

there shouldve been a small black plug going into the top half of the airbox (the plastic covers that shield the actual paper filter) .... this plug is the IAT sensor
IAT = intake air temps (or something to that extent) ... its not terribly crucial, but it lets the engine know how hot the incoming air is so that it can make adjustments - since its an SRI, you can get away with having this sensor just sitting nearby in the engine bay because the air temps wont be that different

Hmm...I didn't see anything like that, but I'll go take a look. Where does the other end connect to? I wonder if its just floating around in the engine bay somewhere...
EDIT: WAIT! Does it go into the stock airbox through a small hole with a rubber washer around it? I saw that hole and assumed it was some sort of breather hole or something. When I took the stock airbox out, there was nothing sticking in that hole.

Alright, rooted around the engine bay for five minutes and found it. I guess a few weeks ago when my uncle had removed the stock airbox(we were installing a cv...axle on the drivers side and he wanted a better look), he forgot to reinstall it. Then went I went to reinstall it today, saw the hole in the stock airbox, and thought it was supposed to be there.
So there's a hole on the pipe for this as well with the rubber washer...stuck it right in. I guess that will also help the sound at idle that makes the short ram sound like a leaking propane tank.
As for where the tube is coming out...I guess I could just get a little breather for that?
Thank you SO MUCH for mentioning the IAT sensor, I never would have known anything was wrong. Thankssss

Seriously? I think it's just that the sun is shining on the engine in every picture and making it look shiny...I just degreased it yesterday but personally I don't think it did much.
I think I'm going to run up to Autozone and grab a little breather for that hole where the hose is...then I'll take a picture. We're going camping later this week, but when we get back I'll try to get some videos up. It was fun sticking it in...kinda my...first real change to the car Haha.
Thanks everyone for the tips and complements

After driving around with this for awhile, I've come to the conclusion that the pipe is simply tooo huge. My low end torque is gone, and it doesn't even sound that good. I'm thinking of getting a smaller pipe, but in the mean time, I was thinking of sticking the stock airhose back on and simply sticking the cone filter on the end. Sort of like Nesquick's youtube video. I know it won't sound as good, but I'm tired of the engine spluttering when I hit the gas.
What do you think?

i think people should stop speculating that intakes change torque noticeably ... you realize how much of a difference in torque there would have to be for you to feel it? much more than was changed, so its either a transmission issue, an incorrect install, or mental
and my weapon-r is about the same size ... no change in driveability, and if you dont believe me youre welcome to come drive my car

The install was correct, maybe some of it's mental, but it doesn't seem like it takes off as well with the short ram installed. And the engine gives this spluttering noise...like it's bubbling or something that it didn't do with the stock airbox. Once it gets going it goes great.
What's the diameter on your Weapon-R intake?

I also kind of think it's killing my gas mileage....I used to get somewhere between 180 and 220 miles at half tank...right now it's at 3/4 tank and I've driven 60 miles since last fillup..
