Starting trouble

I am having a hard time starting my camry 96 V4 XLE. I can hear the distinct click and a soft hum or buzz while the key is held in the "start" position. The lights work so I am not sure it is a battery issue. Although I know the battery is smaller than the original, I bought the car 7 months ago and do not know how old it is. Is it a starter, battery or something else?

A single click while trying to start is a common symptom of the starter contacts going bad. You can buy rebuild kits to replace the contacts, you can buy a used starter (which may or may not have a similar problem) or you can buy a new one. There are several posts on replacing the contacts in a starter on this forum and on Gen 1/2's. You can see if you are comfortable with the routine.

Lights are not a good test of battery condition but often a low battery will result in multiple rapid clicks when you turn the key or nothing at all.
