stupid mechanic

ok, so I will start by saying I haven't been on here in a while, sold my Gen 3, still have my Gen 4 and now have an 06 rolla too. I put a ton of miles on my car, it currently has over 250K miles and though I should consider a new car, it has treated me so well I want to keep going with it. I've noticed in most japanese cars somewhere around 200K miles all the suspension components seem to give at the same time, so I'm sure I've got more ahead of me, but for now my problem was from a simple strut replacement. I would have done myself but didn't have the tools, nameley a spring compressor, and having moved not long ago I couldn't go to a friend and borrow one. so I take it to a backyard mechanic, one of my wifes clients from her insurance office, he gave a a decent price on the labor, I bought the parts, and sure enough I pick up the car, it doesn't drive right, I brought it right back. Turns out he somehow broke the stabilizer bar link that attatches to the strut tube, and rather than telling me used thin wire and tied it together and tried telling me it was safe. I told him, you can tie it all day long, but when your putting the weight of the car into a corner it won't hold. I refused to pay him the whole amount, I paid him for the one side but not the other, now my camry has new struts, but I need to replace the stabilizer bar link. Any advice on this, how much parts should cost, do I need bushing, both sides or just the one of, and tools, doesn't look like I need virtually anything from the FSM. Help please!!!! I assume once it's replaced I should not here something loose in the suspension every crack in the road. Oh, and he forgot to hook the ABS sensor back up, so my ABS light was on, and when it would go off I couldn't brake, real safe huh? I know, didn't need to be this long, but I needed to vent about this idiot

When I replaced my rear struts and strut mounts on my 99 Camry, I replaced both sway bar links. I bought a pair of them for $42 pluss $11 shipping from Arm-Can auto Parts. I found their their parts for sale on Ebay. I installed the links when I replaced my rear struts/shocks and they work fine.

Note: It is always a good idea to replace the sway bar links when replacing the rear struts. Always replace the links with a "pair"f new links. Do not just replace one link.

PS: Removing the old links can be tough since they usually are rusted up pretty good. I found cleaning out the hex head at the end of the threaded stud of the old link first allows for a good grip to be made with an a hex head wrench. Also, spaying the old link nut and thread (including hex at thread end) with penetrating oil a day before trying to remove it and finally applying heat to the nut holding the link onto the strut and sway bar makes the job a lot easier.

Good luck

Continuing on...

You might do that job; it's pretty easy. See the sticky about it. And you might as well change the sway arm bushings, while you're down there. That's another easy and cheap job and will prevent weird noises, too.

That is one dangerous "mechanic"....

Drive laughing!
