3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
First off which weight oil should I get, and how many quarts should i get? Also what kind would you guys recommend. I'm going to be going over to WalMart after work. I'll probably get a Fram filter also.
I've been using Castrol GTX on my cars for years and have had no problems. That's what they used at the dealership where my Toyota mechanic friend works. They just recently switch to Mobil 1 oil because they got a better deal on it with their supplier. So, I wouldn't hesitate to use either Castrol GTX or Mobil 1.
If you get the oil at WalMart, you can get it in 5 quart jugs for around $12 regular price, or less on sale. Oil Capacity on the V6 is about 5 quarts with the filter. I'd get 2 jugs. Then you're sure to have what you need, you have some for top offs if necessary, and whatever you don't use you'll have on hand for the next time.
I use 5W-30.
Don't do the Fram filter. They're poor filters. Go to your local parts store and get a Purolator PureOne filter. They're one of the best for the money. Mobil1 filters are good too, but they're twice the price of the Purolator.
I believe the consensus was that fram is crap, last time this came up. I switched to oem toyota filters, which are no more expensive than any other. The bad part is, you have to go to toyota.

Yeah that's what sucks. I'm hoping Walmart carries other brands beside just Fram.
I use 10W-30 Chevron Supreme (5 qt) and Purolator filters. Mine has 195,000 miles on it and still runs strong. Again, dont use Fram. If you look closely at the Denso filter at the dealer, it is actually a Purolator. You may want to consider a "High Mileage" oil instead of 10W-40.
Oil filters made by FRAM are just overpriced for what they are made of. Allied Signal/Honeywell (Maker of Fram Oil filters) also sells a line of filters called Defense in grey box, which is a Fram filter painted grey or white, for much less.
WIX makes a good oil filter sold at most NAPA, Carquest, etc. as store brand.

I purchase my OEM filters online by the case. You get a price break this way.

SAE tesating indicated the Purolator PureONE as the most efficient full-flow filter on the market (as of 3 years ago, and only 1 company has introduced a new oil filter that I'm aware of, and thats Amsoils new Ea Filter) followed in a close second by WIX, aka NAPA Gold.
The regular Purolator filter is about halfway between the efficiency of a FRAM and a PureONE. I'd definitly advise to go for the PureONE.
Personally, I like either... Valvoline Full Synthetic oils, like Full-Syn High Mileage, or SynPower. If not that, I use Schaeffer's Supreme 7000. I like Molybdenum. lol.
Also use the V-6 PureONE oil filter on my 5SFE I-4.
If you can get your hands on it, I recommend LubroMoly MOS2. Straight up Molybdenum Di-Sulphide. Which is a fantastic anti-wear additive.
I think your best bet if you want to get the best lubrication and mileage out of your car go with 5w-30 weight of high mileage synthetic. I know half of you will say full synthetic is not needed, but it is the best.
