3rd Generation low idle, strange engine start, how to clean the IAC valve?

1)Hi, my problem is: When the engine is hot (normal temp), and I start the engine than the rpm goes up tu 2000rpm for a half secound and then they come down to 900rpm, but sometimes they go down to 500rpm , and than the hole car shakes. Is this normal that when I start the engine that the rpm goes so up? can someone send me a video from his car how it starst when it is at normal temp.?

2) How can I clean the IAC valve (it may be the problem for this low rpm etc.) should I put the hole IAC into petrol or how should I do this? some photos?

3) sometimes when I stop the car, the rpm goes down to 500rpm and the car is on D (drive) , than I let the brake pedal go and the car won't drive, first I have to press a little the acceleration pedal and than I feel a kick (like it feels when I put the car on D)l. Is it possible that the low rpm is the problem?

A dirty idle air control valve could be your problem. You can try cleaning it without removing it first. Remove the big tube leading to the throttle body. Inside the throttle body, at the base, you will see a small square or diamond shaped port leading to the idle air control valve. Spray some throttle body cleaner or O2 safe carb cleaner liberally down in to that port and let it soak for about 10 minutes. While you are waiting you might as well clean the rest of the throttle body. Do a search for "throttle body cleaning". This has been covered numerous times. Now reattach the big tube leading to the throttle body and restart the car. It will be hard to restart and will probably smoke a bit when it does. Don't be alarmed as this is normal. See if this helps your problem; it usually does. If not, you will have to remove the throttle body from the engine for a more thorough cleaning. You will need a new gasket when you reinstall the throttle body, if you have to remove it for cleaning.

Mike i think you discribet a 1MZ-FE engine. My is a 3VZ-FE. and the IAC is not on the bottom of the throttle bodya, but behind it. bout 2 weeks ago I had to instal new head gaskets, and the throttle body is clean , I've cleaned it from this carbon. But I didnt cleaned the IAC becuse I don't know how to clean it?

When I take it out there, what should I do then? Should I spray this throttle body cleaner or else into that hole where that valve is?

Sorry, I'm not that familiar with the 3VZ-FE engine. Most Toyota engines are similiar. Here is a link to cleaning the entire throttle body on a Toyota V6 engine. Not sure which engine is pictured here, but the port leading to the idle air control valve is clearly visible in the pictures. In this case, the port is round:

Yes, but the port may be accessible without removing the throttle body from the engine. You willl have to decide after you remove the large tube and can look inside the throttle body.

in the 3VZ-FE engine the IAC is behind the throttle body, and is srewed into the intake chamber. to remove the IAC you just have to unscrew two nuts.

and here where the arows are should I spary some cleaner? year?

Those seem to be the best choices. If the valve is off, I would spray into those areas and after a few minutes of soaking with the valve upright, I would turn the valve over and let it soak in to the top portions of the valve. I have never actually done this but this seems to be the logical way to clean it without disassembling it.

PS: The more I think about this, a safer alternative might be to try to get a used idle air control valve from the same engine at a salvage yard in your area, and experiment first with cleaning that one.

about two weeks ago a dissambled the hole rotor and coils, and it seems to be hermetic to the rest of the IAC (I mean the valve). And if the cleaner will get into the rotor area I can put the rotor again apart and clean it. (After I dissambled the rotor and the rest the IAC works that same as it works before I dissambeld it)


And should the IAC be programmed after I reset the ECU or put the IAC from the engine? In some car there is a procedure to reprogram the idle. hmmm

Another cleaning method

Hi.

I read that you can also clean it with another person's help:

1) Remove the external air hoses to the Idle Control Valve
2) Remove the electrical contact; keep it handy
3) Have the friend start the car (or if that doesn't work, start the car first and remove the three items above)
4) Spray one orifice at a time, and while doing so, connect and disconnect the electrical connection, several times. Just make it connect electrically; do not snap the connector on. By doing so, removing it again and again will damage the plastic housing.
5) You may have to re-start the car because of it dying out.
6) Repeat with the other orifice
7) Repeat sequence

What happens is that the electrical connection makes the dirty vales move open and closed, assisting tremendously with the cleaning.

I have not tried this myself, but it makes sense.
