Once you are satisfied that the smoke is coming from oil leaking out of your oil pump and elect to replace the oil pump O ring you may want to consider replacing the timing belt, tensioner, water pump and seals all found inside the timing belt cover. Ask them what the additional cost(s) will be. If you just had the t belt replaced at 100,000 then you might have put in a new water pump at that time and the T belt may be fine.

However, did they open up the timing belt cover to determine what was leaking or are they just giving you their best guess? How did they determine that it was the oil pump gasket leaking?

i have to tell you... i have no idea what they did. there is a big puddle of oil in a spot so i guess they assume thats where the leak is since its very common. i bought a few seals and thermometer, but the water pump is $100. someone told me its not necessary, if the bearings go bad the car will make a noise but its ok.
i bought a timing belt too.
do you have suggestions?
thanks Kep

Yes! Get the shop manual for your car, Timing belts have to be installed "just right "or you'll be redoing
the job... and it is a job!

Good Luck!
