3rd Generation harsh grinding sound upon acceleration

Hey. I get this really annoying sound whenever I press the gas pedal. Kinda hard to describe. It's like a harsh grinding sound, like 2 pieces of metals are being rubbed together on a pan with boiling water inside. The kind of noise you frequently hear on old pontiac cars (from my experience). Like I said, it is only happening when I accelerate. As soon as I stop pressing, the noise goes away. The pressure I give doesn't matter. Of course if I floor it the sound will be loud and if I slightly press on it, then you will hear it a lot less. I simply mean that I hear this sound as soon as I rev the engine.

A couple of day ago it wasn't so bad. You could hear the sound for one second, then it disappeared for 3-5 seconds, rinse and repeat. But now it just won't go away.

Another problem. My engine keeps jumping from 600 to 1000 rpm (forth and back) when I am idle at a red light for example (still on D gear of course). Timing belt ?

The car is a 92 Camry with the V6 engine. Automatic transmission.

Thanks for your help.

well, I'm just a noob here, but I'll give you my 2 cents...
Does the sound occur when you rev the car in park or neutral? I would also check all your fluid levels.

Might sound like a waterpump bearing about to go take a walk.
