3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I've been looking for a new car since I threw a rod out of my engine block. After a week of looking around, I've come to the conclusion that I want a new or used motor to swap in my camry.
I had one big question, when looking for a new motor what years had the same setup. I have basically everything but the block. So I figure that should make this easier. So could I let's say put a 96' motor in and wire it up with my harness and use my sensors ... ect. Or are there parts of the block (5SFE) that changed over the years.
Also do you guys know where is a good place to get a motor is. I've looked at many, but dont know which are reputable. I also dont want to spend $2000+ on just a motor, which is what I'm finding.
Anyways, any ideas? and yes I've tried ebay

I heard some horror stories about tigerdirect, they did have one however.
I've been checking local yards with no luck, but had my father do some looking around downstate and he found one, but the guy says, well we dont know how many miles were on it, since people swap odometers out and such, but it's only $500. wtf! how can someone say that, it's total bs, I'd probably consider buying it if I knew how many miles were on it. On top of that I know the idiots at that yard and know for a fact they have at least 10-12 gen3's, he probably only looked for 92's

For the 5SFE 92-95 is all the same
96 is a one off year (same as 92-95 but with a different oil pump and a crank position sensor, so a 92-95 engine can be used in a '96 with change of oil pump/sensor)
97-?? is different went to electronic ignition no distributor, but as crank sensor
I had a JDM 5SFE from JDM Engine Depot in NJ put in my son's '96 camry about 2 years ago, it is still running good after more than 30,000 miles.
Standard Auto Wreckers are pretty reasonably priced compared to a lot of wreckers around here. [they're located the east end of TO] and have a upic lot. They're recently opened a facility in NY that's fully indoors, no upic though.
thx for all the ideas, much appreciated. Things are getting interesting now, apparently it looks like the insurance company is going to total the car, over a burnt bumper.. So assuming they give a decent price, like $2-3k, I can get a re-manufactured(aka the expensive ones) engine. Of course I'll need a salvage title, but oddly enough it'll be this car's third title. That would leave me with my $2800 to install, get new cvc's, tires and some suspension components. I'm excited, but not too excited yet.
I do like the look on peoples faces when they ask why the car hasnt moved and I say well I threw a rod through the block and it burst into flames.....car looks perfectly normal.
Getting the oil off the underside should prove to be an environmental disaster.
oh fyi, the kbb value retail is ~$3600, private party in good condition ~$2600 not bad!

if you got $3k from the insurance ... you could buy a used Gen 3 in near-perfect condition, no need to mess around with crate motors or sifting through ads of crappy Gen 3s with 10 owners and broken trannys

and i would definitely browse AutoTrader for what i said, because something like this might be worthwhile if you can run the VIN # and see its history, because it looks good and im sure there are even better deals in your area
