EEngineer's 94 LE thread #2 revival!!!

Alright! for my original thread here is it: EEngineer's Time to Shine 94 TEAL LE

I worked on my car for a good 6 hours today.
First of all, i took off my valve cover and checked for sludge, and to my surprise, my car isnt that dirty...just in the engine bay is kinda dirty, so i thought i'd do a thorough clean and paint the valve cover. so here are some pics.

as you see, it isnt bad...but it isnt exactly clean. it's got a thin layer of dried up sludge around the spark plug pole thing...so i ended up wire brushing them and taking out anything hard big by hand. and then i sprayed it with deep creep seafoam to clean up things a little.

took me an good hour or so to get the valve cover thoroughly cleaned...washed it with some harsh chemical stuff that took out all the sludge under it. I then sprayed it with deep creep to keep things oiled.

ready for paint! RED!!!

first coat

while the valve cover was drying, i took my time brushing clean whatever and touching everywhere to find any dirty stuff i can pick out my hand

i say the insides look pretty clean.

so while the valve cover took 3 hours to dry, i pried open the intake and sprayed the throttle body thoroughly with seafoam deep creep again and brushed the inside with tooth brush. and it wasn't really that dirty to my surprise.

starting to put everything together...

finally put everything back together..everything looked good
started the engine and seafoam was smoking out..hehe it was fun

now...as for randomness
this is a cool slammed vehicle

an ambulance bus! it's on airbags!! wOOt slammage

Nice work!

Now I guess the exhaust shields will need to match.

Did you have to replace the valve cover gasket in this project?

the exhaust manifold doesnt clean up well with polishing - but IMO, the exhaust heat shields look good when painted, but only if you use Duplicolor High Heat (or other equivalent) because anything weaker will bubble/peel

I used duplicolour high heat paint with ceramic on my heat shields (bright green) and the paint yellowed very quickly around the bolt holes.

VHT has some high temp paint which I may look into later.

Gen3 5S engines use a cast iron header, so polishing will be alot of work.

Do not consider the caliper paint in a can. Filling the casting marks with a caliper paint is not good either, the expansion and cooling will crack the coating because it is too thick.

VHT > Duplicolor High Heat - but requires baking in a oven ... and im lazy

my Duplicolor didnt yellow around the bolts, but i have the bolts painted black as well so maybe that helped?

well, i had 3 high heat engine enamels...

black/silver/red....
black looks too Nissan-ish
silver defeats the point of painting it

thus...RED!

and i think i'll take out the exhaust header shields and paint them when i replace my oxygen sensor. hopefully that will give me better gas mileage...

my shit gas mileage is killing me 21 mpg last tank...urgh.

what do your spark plugs look like?

use Google Maps or Mapquest to calculate % Hwy driving (im sure u can figure that out using MS Excel) ... and what speed/rpm do you usually drive at on the highway?

what rpm are you at if youre cruising at 60mph? 70mph? 80mph?

when your car first starts - is the exhaust visible, even when its warm out? is it visible after the car is up-to-temp?

no leaks? oil looks good? coolant looks fine and is proper level?

... trying to give you some things to check, because 21mpg is enough of a drop to be a recognizable problem

BTW under the new EPA ratings your Camry is rated at 18 mpg city. If you are doing heavy city driving with slow speeds and lots of starting and stopping I don't think it's unusual to get 21 mpg.

Hey EE

Where are you going to put that VTECH sticker?

HAHAHA

Great Job man. And you were worried about sludge. As for the MPG, borrow some one's Scan Gauge. 94's are OBD-II right?

my spark plugs are fine, semi new....from cruisn76

% of highway driving = 10-15%
a stretch of 55mph 90 km/h highway (DVP) lol....if u even call that a highway...but i drive 65 70 anyway

when i crusie at 120 i'm at 2800ish rpm i think...100 i'm at 2200 rpm not exactly sure give an take 1-200 rpm. so it's completely normal

my car's exhaust is very clean...i've never ever seen any sort of visible smoke when it's warm outside.

coolant is fine...no leaks as far as i know of. freon leaks though lol

and my oil gets dirty, but that's normal. my oil looks like soy bean sauce when i'm doing my oil changes.
and i use Castrol GTX high mileage.

my car is in a friggin good condition,....and i'm gonna change my o2 sensor next see if that does anything.

i do drive hard though...when i accelerate at red light i usually hit 3000 rpm....when im tired i go less lol.

AND NO NO NO to VTEC stickers...i already got VTEC on my 07 accord, but i never hit VTEC...cuz never really drive that car hard cuz the auto tranny.......dont need another one with VTEC.
