3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
When I start up my 93 SE, 6 cylinder, the engine zooms up to 2,500 RPM then settles down after that. Since that happens immediately when it catches, I'm concerned about no oil in the cylinders. And it just doesn't sound right.
The air intake hose is new ( an aftermarket; a pain - in - the - a-- fit, too!). Any other hoses that it could be? There are sooo many, and they go sooo weirdly deep into the depths!!
So this started hapenning right after you installed the new intake hose?
The fact that it settles down after a bit makes me think that this isn't the problem, but I thought I'd share anyway. And I have the 4cylinder motor, not the 6 cylinder, so I don't know if this even applies.
But if your throttle body has the two cords going to it, I would check to see that those aren't pulled any tighter than they normally would be. When I had my stock airbox out, I reinstalled it wrong, accidentally stretching out one of the cords in the process. Started up the car and it was idling at 2k rpm. So I took out the pipe again, and reinstalled it making sure to route the wire to where it originally had been. Presto, problem gone.
I wonder if it's that simple though.

i also have a 1993 camry se 5 speed. when i start my car the rpm's are also pretty high above a normal idle speed. it freaked me out at first, plus it was kinda hard to drive the 5 speed with the engine tached up, so i took it to a mechanic that i've known for years. he checked it out and did something to my ecu. it still does it, but not nearly as bad. it immediately starts going down after i start it and takes no more than 2 minutes to idle normal. i think you'll be ok as long as it goes down pretty quickly and is drivable,
my 96 Camry XLE does the same thing, revs high until warmed up. Mine is an automatic , so I make sure I get it into gear soon to load up the engine and keep the revs more reasonable. One could carefully do this w a 5 speed as well. I would actually bet it is not a vacuum leak if it goes away when the engine is warm.
This high rev happened after I cleaned the Throttle Body (as best that can be done while still attached). The revs go way up but come right down to about 1,00 RPM. This also happened prior to my attaching the new air intake hose.
Maybe I just have to live with it, but ~ 2,500 rpm at start is disconcerting...
OK thats wierd it seem like theres too much air going in, something seems to be lose allowing the the outside air to rush in without passing through the air intake...IAC doesnt seem to be the culprit because if your had low idle it could be the IAC but high rpm your getting more the "ideal" air into the cylinders at idle... Best of luck to everyone...

Mine does the same thing when I start it until it's warm then drops to 1000rpm's. I just thought this was normal [??] My jeep [I6 4.0L] always did the same thing. Ran on the highside until the engine warmed up and then all was fine.
What I don't like though is after running highway speeds and coming to a stop, the idle drops to about 750, then comes back to 1000. Not sure what that's all about.
