Popping noise when shifting gears?

Hey,

Lately I have noticed that sometimes when I shift gears, not always, but usually from 1st to 2nd I hear a popping noise... It seems to happen mostly in the low gears.

This is on a 1992 I4 Manual Camry, what could be causing this?

Thanks!

I've noticed on mine it kinda pops from 1st to 2nd. But it sounds and feels like it's in the shift linkage. And then 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th are kinda splunchey crunchy noises.

Usually just a pop from 1st to s2nd, rest of the gears seam fine. Ocasionally I get a pop from 2nd to 3rd... Never 3 to 4 or 4 to 5.

What needs to be checked or replaced? Whats causing this? Is it expensive?

Is it when you move the actual shifter, or when you clutch in or out?

If it's when you move the shifter, you probably have a bad bushing, or the joint the shifter pivots on may need lubricating. Usually when the synchros in the transmission start going out, you will hear grinding noises and/or the car will not want to go into gear.

If it's more when you clutch in or out, especially when you dump the clutch or just stay in the gas a little as you clutch in or out, you might have a motor/transmission mount issue.

mmm

it could be the wheel bearings, i had a similar prob lately, popping sound during take off, changing to 2 and 3 gear. without jacking the car. just grab the top of each tire and shake it, in and out with force. If you hear a clunking or clicking you've got a problem.
hope it helps
