I really need help on this...questions on modding..
hey guys, so ive got a question, and im sorry if this seems like a stupid question or somethin but its really been makin me question what i should do with the cam.
so i was wondering about the "weak spots" of a 1994 v6 camry. what i mean by weak spots is area of the engine and car that maybe cnt handle extra horse power or type of performence mods.
for example the pistons. i hear that the camry pistons arnt very durible. Like tony the tiger and his turboed camry. (btw Tony the Tiger, ur camry is friggin amazing!) I read on his turbo page on his personal site, that he had to get new, more durible pistions to keep up with the extra power and stuff.
so i guess im looking for places where i need to replace parts so when i add extra power i wont f*ck up the engine or transmission parts ect. I hope this question makes sense.
p.s. I know there isnt a lot of performence stuff out there for the cam but im goin for uniqueness over top speed u know.
I don't think you know what you are getting in to. You could safely turbo the stock engine and add some reliable horsepower with a turbocharger no problem. You will need to look into pistons when you want to start getting into serious power (300+ whp)
there are cars on the stock engine that make high numbers, but if you only have one car then why risk it until you can afford to go without it for a while.

tony's car needed forged pistons because its a 500hp car ... anything reasonable should be fine with stock internals, including your basic entry-level custom turbo setup
there arent any obvious weak spots that you have to watch out for - building the 1MZ-FE is gonna be straightforward, it just doesnt respond well to basic bolt-ons because its an economy engine with an economy head

I say, grab a whole different motor and rebuild that one slowly.. that way- when ur engine takes a dump.. just drop it in! .. this would also eliminate the "rush" factor of the build.
i have to agree with ^him. id get a junked engine or high millage one and build it up how you want it. if i decide to keep the camry thats what ima gonna do. but we cant really say what all youd need to upgrade without knowing what power ya want to achieve. i can tell ya that the weak spot isnt the engine as you progress up the hp range(asside from the fuel system)...its the auto tranny first.
well that depends on the build of course. which depends on a HP goal. but if its anything over 300whp then yeah it would be a better investment to just look for the HP else where. unless ya wawnt a high HP camry.
thanks for all of ur input guys, i really apprechiate it! i dont know too too much about cars so im tryin to learn lol
as for my hp goals, lets just say sometime,(now remember i said sometime) would like to match tony the tigers cam, it would be amazing to have such powerful camry, but i know that goal is a long way away lol
haha well going for tony you need tens of thousands of dollars especially because i dont think you can do the work yourself. if that is something you want i would just set it aside and enjoy your car unless you are rolling in cash :P
if you want something decently quick while still being unique camry type i would pick up a supercharger. you can get one up and running for 3k or so i would say but then you are going to soon want a 5spd swap im guessing...
yeah to even come close to what Tony has your gonna need to be rich, stupid or Tony(he has a shop). at 300hp the engine will start to feel the strain even with the supercharger. easiest way to get high hp is to start with an already boosted car. in many cases the engine doesnt need a TON of stuff or a completly built motor to produce some nice numbers like these do.
^ Was the guy at CPT with the turbo solara running forged internals? He was putting down some pretty serious power himself.
Honestly though, don't listen to these camry sissy-girls. If you want to build up your car, do it. Just be smart about it. Don't buy redundant items, reinforce things that are most likely to fail (auto tranny will start to fail after about 250whp IIRC), and NEVER EVER CHEAP OUT ON PARTS. Always buy good parts. Ebay parts tend to give ebay performance.

do some more research my friend, the limits are as high as your wallet can stretch and who said toyota pistons aren't strong? whoever said that def. does not know about toyota bottom ends.... you can achieve good power by small litle things remember its not a honda you cant just throw bolts on at it. its takes a little more finesse....
