3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I bought this stupid car (1997 Camry LE) 2 months ago, I put a crank kit into the 5SFE and then the radiator blew and spun a rod bearing. I pulled that engine and bought a Reman, So, Reman, new water pump, new oil pump, new cam sensor, new plugs, new wires, new 2-3 coil, new alt, new timing belt, new pcv, Installed engine every thing went together well, I crank the car up and very bad idle, I have to feather the gas to keep it running, all plugs are sooty, black smoke from the tail pipe, misses at all rpms, shows no codes on my scanner, no fault lights, Temp sensor OHM check is good IAW Chilton. I am at a loss and at the end of my rope. Any suggestions would be helpful, anything, If someone can describe the engine management system to me that could be helpful! Please Respond!:c onfused:
After resetting the CPU it always idles like crap though. Last time i did that, my car did that too. But i'm not sure about the sooty plugs or smoke though.
double check the map sensor and surrounding connections, thats my only guess. I hate problems like these that don;t throw any codes or give any clues, best of luck!

You know soot, soft black carbon type substance, when an engine runs rich (too much fuel) the exhaust smoke is black, and the spark plugs are covered with black carbon.(fuzzy looking soot)
My diesel exhaust pipe look just like it, all black and sooty!
The car wont idle at all, turn the key it fires up then dies, you hold the pedal half way or so, then it will run @ about 1100 rpm, if you floor it, revs up with a miss.
