4th Generation Advantages of Cold Air Intake filter

HI
I am a newbie..never had any kind of modifications done on my 1997 camry LE 4cyl..
Thanks to you guys on TN that I have learnt a thing or two..The other day I bought a Cone Cold Air Intake filter...
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...?part=spe-9738

I am still debating whether to install it or not..what are some of the advantages and DISADVANTAGES of having it installed...My biggest worry is that i dont want to lose my mileage..miles per gallon..dont care much about power...

From the forums I read..people suggested to install it under the front bumper to intake cold air..Is it not too low there to fix..what are the changes of water seeping in case of very heavy rainfall..

Also where can I find the tube connecting the filter and throttle for cheap..new or used...

and please Pardon my ignorance..i am just a beginner..

Thanks for all your suggestions

unless you go to autozone (or some other place) and buy a duild your own kit all the ones i seen come with the filter...for our gen4's there arent many true cold air setups, only short ram intakes (it puts the filter where the stock box is) the best place is to check ebay as far as price goes...and as everyone will tell you it wont really do alot performance wise, just sound nice and might waste more gas listening to it...

gas mileage shouldnt change unless your driving habits do. you might see an increase if your stock system was congested even.

yes hydrolocking is a risk. but if you are cautious and dont go through big puddles you should be safe

Personally would leave the system stock.

The K&N system apparently adds 5 HP (according to K&N) but most owners report no difference other then noise.

The 4 cylinder head was designed for fuel economy and commuter driving, the flow is not the best to start with. Adding a new air intake is not going to change this.

i would just do a short ram intake, it sounds very good, especially for you 5sfe guys and is much safer. some performance people will argue cai or nothing but for our cars there is no noticeable power increase anyway so might as well be safe with the sri and happy

Looks like you haven't learned enough yet. Cone installed under hood is not CAI. You have a CAI now with stock setup.

No advantage unless you think more noise and less filtration are advantages.

Then why are you considering this? It'll mean just more noise. Do you think that will attract the girls?

And how much of a restriction do you think you'll get from and extra 5 -6 feet of corrugated intake hose?

Every inch of tubing and every elbow or curve will increase the restrictions and reduce air flow.
K&N are generally more porous so let in more air, more dirt. If oiled type is used, too much can damage the mass air flow meter, too little does not hold back the dirt.
Air systems are generally designed to force the contaminated air to turn sideways or back so that only the clean air can make the turn, extending the life of the air filter. This increases the resistance at high speed and slightly reduces air flow, but the engine/filter system is designed with a 25" water column resistance tolerance. Air rams, snorkels, or whatever you want to call them make up for the resistance caused by the clean air turning, but add dirt to the filter.
I would never put an air intake under the bumper. You will take in so much road dust that you will be changing filters frequently.

I can tell you the intake will not affect your gas mileage unless you constantly floor the gas pedal to hear the intake.

On Friday I did a trip from Oshawa, ontario --> Georgian Bay. Total KM's is approx 350km, round trip 700km. Believe it or not i used just over 1/4 of gas. I thought my gas meter was broken I kept tapping the cluster to see if it would move.

My average speed was about 110-120km/h. I have a SRI installed, and recently did an entire seafoam. So I got really really good mileage. I have yet to refuel and currently stand at 832km on 3/4 used.

So go ahead install that intake. It won't decrease your mileage, it might even help.

EDIT: Right now if I were to get gas at 3/4 empty (approx 50 liters or 13Gal) i would be getting about 40MPG. OMG that is ridicious I swear this is what my odometer is reading. Stock wheels, 87 octane, tire PSI @ 34, 25 degrees celsius weather, no A/C usage at all. ALL HIGHWAY driving
