3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 2001 silver camry and i was wondering if you guys had any ideas on some relatively cheap things I could do to make it look cool. I want it to look like a teenager owns it and not a grandma without making it look ricey.
I was thinking tints (im not sure what percent I should do though) and maybe some new exaust parts im not really sure. I also wanted to change the look of the tail lights. I like the tail lights from some of the earlier years but in the 2001 they changed the tail lights shape and it looks a little more grandma-ish
the 2001 camry tail lights (my car) ^
the 1999 camry tail lights ^
I like the earlier lights better but i have the 2001 so i have to deal with it. I ]thought that maybe putting some tints on the tail lights would make it look a little bit better.
Well if you guys would just let me know what cheap things I could do to make the car look cooler overall it would be awesome. Thanks a lot for the help guys
first of all...whats cheap? under 300? under 500? under a grand?
i can tell ya there isn't much. but because u have a gen4.5(00-01) then you can get the halo headlights blacked out or not. those look real good. to redo those rear lights ud have to replace the trunk with one from an earlier model, not worth the hassle imo. wheels, paint your calipers, muffler, intake(sound) and suspension are defiantly a big help as well.
hmm youre one of the first people ive ever seen that likes the 4 better than the 4.5 ... LETS TRADE
if youre talking cheap like ... my kinda cheap, you could do: debadging (essentially free: you need a really hot sunny day, dental floss, goo-b-gone), clear corners, and upgraded headlight bulbs (e.g., silverstar ultras).
theyre not hids but they should give you whiter light at night ... they only cost around 30 bucks i think.
change the dome light, put a exhaust tip, add a decal on the back window

i recently got a 01 camry and was wondering the same thing.
i got it 2 weeks ago, and 4 days ago somebody backed into it while it was parked in front of my girlfriends house and ran off (irrelevant to the thread i know, but im still upset over it) so i gotta fix that first
i was thinking window tints , probably 5% in the back
i want to tint the tail lights , did a little research online and found a spray called "VHT Nite Shade" (all the forums say to put clear coat on top of the nite shade but im thinking to be extra cheap and skip the clear coat)
- i emagine the black taillights would look good because of the size of the camry taillights
i plan on putting some time to find some rims for it, probably stock at a junk yard since it would be cheapest (i just want to get rid of the steelies)
aside from that just maintanance it's got 85k miles so im thinking it could benefit from plugs wires, etc and teh timing belt schedule is coming up
hey man if you wanna make your 01 camry look good, go with tints 35% or lower. Then i'd suggest just liek BIgBIrd get the black halo headlights and if you want retrofit some projectors in there. AND get a nice Cold Air Intake or Short Ram Intake, gives the car a "beefier sound". NAD if you go get that Tint is the back lights either with The Tint Shade spray or buy tint flim and cover them with that if you dont like the tint on the taillights you can take them off

in defense of my grandma and other old folk they drive caddy's and buick (the average age of a caddy driver is 55 and toyota is hovering around 48, mind you Nissian/Honda is Worse average age is like 800, where i live all i see are knuckles above the steering wheel)

I used to have a 2001 like you and I really like the look of the tail lights when i switched to the red/clear ones. You can also try to find a nice spoiler either the OEM one or the TRD one. I also agree with everyone above who said to tint the car. It'll look so much better. I also suggest lowering the car and changing the wheels but that may cost a little more. Here is a picture of my old car with the tail lights I'm talking about.

I agree that I should start with the tints like most of you said. It's not to sunny a lot where I live (Seattle, WA) so I was thinking that i should go with lighter tints around 15 or 20 percent but i'll have to check it out. Also I really like what you did to your old car Arisotezza. I think the lights you have look a lot better than the original. How would I get a hold of those lights, would I have to order it online? I also like the exhast so I wanna do something chrome like that as well. Then later on those halo head lights that big bird was talking about sound good and then the cold air intake creeps mentioned is a good idea. I want to do the rims and suspension but that's is gonna cost a little more like you guys said so i'll hold off on that for now.
theres lots of options you have to choose from. In the end your going to have make it your own. everyone here has their own style. there is no cheap when it comes to looks. I agree I like the gen4 rear lights as well. just go for it.

alright thanks a lot. I'm not gonna start adding anything until I figure out what i'm gonna do with the car i have currently (check out my other thread on adding power to my camry). Even if i get a new camry im gonna do the same things i was gonna do with the one i have so we'll see what i decide to do with it.
