KBY, TOKICO, or MONROE??

I took my car to the mechanic and the struts need to be replaced. I suggested KYB GR-2, but he said the ride would be hard and they were going to works best when the car was loaded. I also suggested TOKICO because i herd good things about them, they were also turned down by the mechanic. He suggested MONROE because they were softer and would give a more comfortable ride. Which should i really go with in terms of comfort, control, stability, and overall better ride???

hmm never heard of monroe but kyb's are recommended for comfort. they're supposed to be closest to oem ... as a matter of fact, i've had them on my car since i inherited it 2 years ago and didnt even know until last week.

tokicos are stiffer ...

depends what youre looking for.

I see the Monroe brand at Sears all the time. If you're looking comfort, but better than oem control, go with KYBs.

i have tokico with stock spring, and the ride is almost perfect, no floaty feel, yet not too harsh for daily driver.

i've Monroe brand on now w/ Eibach lower springs. they're ok i wouldnt complain but it wasnt the best if u looking for more performance driving.

i have them for little bit more than 3 yrs now they're cheap but the body of the strut starting to rust. i'm guessing it wont last that long probably need to replace soon

Monroe I believe are pretty much OEM replacement.
KYB GR-2 are a good DD with a bit better control.
Tokico HP sacrifice a bit of comfort for better performance and a stiffer ride.

I'd say if you want a bit of a better ride without losing too much comfort, go with the KYB GR-2.
If you are just focused on having a comfortable ride get OEM replacements or Monroes.

Check out Venom's suspension thread for more info:

Hope that helps

I have both on the Coupes, and I prefer the Tokico over the KYB's....but if ur not going with a performance springs, go with the KYB's..closer to OEM according to my mechanic.

Ok i guess imma go with the Monroe since my mechanic is insisting that they according to him more comfortable, i also hope this solves the Clunk Cluck sound i mentioned in a previous thread which is driving me nuts.. I will also replace the strut mounts to get it out the way.

Did you change your rear sway bar bushings? they are notorious for making clunking sounds.

monroe may have a lifetime and if your asking someone at o'rileys they will suggest it because its basicly the only thing they carry which would be why they insist it... go with something different especially if you intend to do anything fun with the car in the future, otherwise your wasting your money on things that can be better

btw Venom_5's old post has risen to the top page of threads take a look at that before you settle on your previous option.

I have Monroe Sensa-tracs on my car, its a little harder than OEM and less than Koni, Tokico etc. If you just need some replacements and want to make sure theres no problems in the futrue, go with Monroe's. I bought mine at Monroe Muffler and came with a lifetime warrenty but does not cover removing/installing. So far no problems with it, just wished that a bought different springs because my rims looks bad with the huge fender gap.

I had monroe on my 94, they felt like stock. How much stiffer are the Tokico's compared to stock? If anyone could answer as best they could would be great, I don't want to regret too much stiffness. I don't plan on lowering and I don't want it to feel like a lumber wagon.

kpszar, did you add those fogs? Are they stock or aftermarket? I was thinking of getting the oem bezel kit and aftermarket fogs.

hey
i JUST got my car done with JYB GR2 today
i was going back and forth with either that or Monroe, even looked into getting the quick strut by monroe
then i thought about buying the sensatrac
but at the end went with the kyb - keep in mind you'll have to change some small bars for the rear so factor in an extra $80-100 for the pair

the ride isn't that bad, maybe i'm being too harsh on them but it's comfy, HELLA better then not having any shocks.. lol
i kept the oem springs, but i hear if you change them too, it makes a difference.

i'd recommend them, they're doing a good job (even though i only drove around for about 2 hrs and went from the mechanics to home)

and they're not that expensive either
go to an independent mechanic - i got them done for $750 canadian dollars plus an extra 100 for the bars i just mentioned.

hope this helps
