Can some of you guys with aftermarket SINGLE DIN stereos please post some pics of them installed? Im replacing my stereo in the V6 this week and already have an aftermarket in the I4, but was unable to get the trim piece installed because of the part that surrounds the vents. It sticks out too much and wont allow the trim to sit flush.
How have you guys worked this out? Id like to see some pics if possible?
Thanks!

Here's a really really old pic of my stereo. Your stereo should fit flush, not sure why the trim sticks out? Are you using two many brackets? Should be pretty easy, like almost plug and play.
As said above, should just be basically plug and play. To mount it flush, don't use the trim piece that came with the headunit. If you want to use it, just bring it slight forward so it fits. This is what I did. Fits perfectly with a CB underneath it.
btw buy an alpine, it costs a bit more then other brands but is also the best.
+1 if you have an iPOD or an iPhone you wanna run, the Alpine CDA-9886 is a really good headunit. The deck allows you to connect the iPod or iPhone at full-speed meaning you have complete control of the ipod from the deck. I am currently running that deck and cannot complain at all, great output also.
btw, you can also look at the Alpine CDA-9884 which has some Red and might not match the interior, the 9886 is all blue, so it makes it look cool!!!! Try http://www.crutchfield.com top notch customer service too!
here is the model fyi
9886 marine (coated for marine use)
9886 regular
and the 9884

My stereo in the I4 sits JUST like the one silver streak posted. It's missing the trim piece that goes around it to make it look finished.
I really would like for that trim piece to work, but the dash that surrounds the vents above the stereo sticks out further as you can see in Silver Streaks pic.

Ill post a pic of mine tomarrow!!! i had the same exact problem and all i did was cut out the centerpiece of the trim and trim off the sides.... i did it all in my preengineering class hahaha ill post pics tomarrow and a sorta small DIY in this thread.
id do it now but i gotta take pics and its raining right now
i got the 9884, it sucks the 96 just had a price drop. before it was like 100 extra and i was like screw that for 4v preout. Now i would get it.
Also with the alpine you can use a cable that u plug into the aux port of the alpine (Not the normal ipod port) and it lets you use ur ipod to select the music not the headunit.

Im not trying to spend that much money on a stereo. Im just wanting MP3 support and the USB port on the one I got is just an added bonus. Gonna be installing a notebook hard drive in an external case and mounting it in my pocket

This is my JVC stereo.
Do you really want to use the external hard drive?
Maybe you need to consider about something.
1. The shock from driving may damage the hard drive.
2. Is the power from the stereo USB port enough to drive the external hard drive? (I don't know. Just guess...)
With the first stereo that I installed in my I4, I took a Dremel Tool and shaved the top edge of the trim ring down until it would fit. It looked OK, but not great. You could tell I had modified it. I replaced that stereo last year, and then also put a new stereo in my V6, I didn't use the trim ring with either of those stereos. It took me a little while to get used to the "raw" edge look, but now I think it looks better than my old Dremel job. Just leave the trm ring off.
