oil pan gasket problem

Anyone ever have a problem re-installing the oil pan on a 94 4 cyl?
On the transmission side, there are two studs that hold some kind of foam piece that goes between the transmission and oil pan. This is where my headache is...
The problem I'm having is, everytime I tilt the pan and wedge it in, the gasket either smears (RTV) or kinks and binds (cork).
I've tried this twice now, and I'm getting sick of seeing oil pour out when I start it up.
What am I missing? What's the trick?

3rd Generation

Remove that hard foam piece, along with the transmission inspection plate. it's only a few bolts, and it'll save you a lot of trouble installing the pan. Also, did you disconnect your exhaust pipe that runs down under the oil pan? if you disconnected it up at the front of the engine and then at the hook slightly back from the engine compartment, the pipe comes down quite a bit, too.

OK thanks
I think that will work. I didn't realize that plate could be removed...the transmission inspection plate.
I already pulled the whole front exhaust pipe, which helped, but not enough.

I purchased about $150 in 2 Toyota Factory Manuals as well as an $18 Haynes, there is a point at which you need to look after yourself and spend a little of your own money and time to fix YOUR car. This forum is not a one stop, hand holding, free source for auto repair.

Ouch, that hurts...anyway, good for you, you have all the resources.

If somebody can give me some pointers, I will do a DIY and then I have done something for this Forum and its very supportive members, that's all. I want to give something in return.

It is not all about the money or is it?

No, you do need to remove the inspection plate, as it holds that foam piece in place, which is over top of a couple of the oil pan bolts.

It's also easier to remove the transmission to engine brace to aid in getting the oil pan in without smearing the RTV.
