3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I'm looking to chop off my current muffler, and throw on a newer one.
I live in Cali, and my Camry ain't turbocharged, so throwing on a whole system is pretty pointless IMO (we can't legally delete cats either here).
The one I have on now was about $50 @ a JDM auto parts store Super Autobacs.
I saw a couple universal HKS, and APEXI mufflers there too, but I was curious as to any you guys have tried, and sound very aggressive, rumbly, or loud?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
*On a side note as I rolled into the parking lot to this place, some douche-bags said, "oh wow watch out, tough ass car bro." Of course referring to my Camry ... so I redlined it in their ears! But I need a louder. and tougher muffler damnit!!!*
if you want a nice exhaust, go with something thats got a deeper tone to it, not a louder.
loud is rice. deep is nice.
in my opinion hks, greddy, and borla sounds the best, but their a little pricy
if you dont have a nice intake either get one.
the sound is so much nicer.
neither will give you anymore power though, incase you were gonna ask
my $47 ebay muffler has a pretty deep roar. doesn't sound the way I wanted, but it's good enough =]
i'll post a good video of it with the real proper sound one day.
I don't know if you can get one or not, but I've got a complete stainless steel OBX system (high flow cat, header, etc.) on my Geo Prizm and it's real deep and loud. I'm in Kalifornia too, so I just put on the stock exhaust manifold and cat every other year to get it smogged. It's a great system for the price and, with my Weapon-R intake, makes some good power over stock.
I'm keeping my Camry stock (family cruiser), so I don't know if you can find this setup for one. It's worth a try. Otherwise, I'd just try to get a shop to weld you a Flowmaster on it.

I'm going to college, so making a powerplant from my 5S-FE is not in the current budget.
I guess loud was a dumb requirement to add... I meant more growl, and tough sounding.
I have a nice intake on there, so it sounds pretty good at higher rpms.
HKS, Greddy, Borla Flowmaster and magnaflow supposedly have been reccomended soundwise?

Hmm, cool idea, I'll look into it.
I guess I need to learn how to weld, because that would seemingly be a pain in the crack to pay for and re-do each time.... or is it?
My Camry has barely any mods on it right now, plus I'm a new guy to TN, so thanks for your guys's responses
because its a camry with nothing to show off, putting anything slighttly audible is pointless and will get you MORE comments like that. plus reving at people certianly wont help either. personally i think the most agressive the 5sfe can sound with with an intake and thats all. its loud and sounds pretty mean. if your gonna go muffler get somthing quiet like magnaflow or somthing like that.

I agree with what you're saying, but I do like having the aftermarket exhaust. I want something deeper, and more rumbly sounding then loud.
As far as comments go, I couldn't give less of a sh** what people think when I drive by 'em! It's my car, and I'm proud of it no matter how slow it is.
And I only revved because they were driving civics, and by stark contrast to Toyota Camrys, civics are the dumbest cars ever evented.
To address a previous comment: Glasspacks and Cherry Bomb's sound really terrible on Camrys
