Thumbs up My new 93 camry...

I just purchased a 93 camry xle... It has 133,xxx it's in almost perfect condition visually, has very few blemishes, the paint is very shiny. and also the interior is practically perfect, it runs and drives real nice. I bought it for $2000
The past owner, just replaced the motor mounts, the timing belt, and the brake lines.
There are only 2 issues i have to resolve, first is the ac. It does not blow cold, but the compressor kicks on. When i drive the compressor makes a whining sound as i accelerate. I realize i have to put a retrofit, from r12-r14. Does anyone know how much it would cost to install it? and do these kits actually work? The kit is for sale at walmart for $32. Do you think I'll need to replace the compressor?
the second issue is, part of the power window actuator broke, so i need to replace this small plastic part which isn't really a big deal.
Other then that I'm really pleased. It does not look like a 15 year old car, and definitely does not drive like one. I'll try to take some pics tomorrow and post em up.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Congrats!

On the regulator. If it's what mine did last week. I just replaced the whole unit [minus the motor as my motor is good] Gotta love plastic parts! Just hit a local wreckers if you have one and get what ya need.

As for the AC, it depends on what may be needed. Mine did the same thing, but had to be retrofitted. Once done it did hold a vacum. I've since had a couple leaks I've managed to fix for now. One was one of the seals is seeping, the other is the valve for the high side is leaking. [will have to get it fixed where I had it done since they installed the retro kit]

It may be same as my system was. Everything seems to work, and replacing one of lines [the low side valve was corroded so it couldn't be removed] found that there was still oil in the system so the leak was enough to let out the refridgerant, but not the oil. Either way, get it properly checked and do a vacum test. As long as it holds a vacum, you should be good to go.

1) AC- I recommend taking it to a good shop. Sure, you could do the retrofit yourself, but here's the thing. The AC refrigerant is sealed system, if there isn't enough in it now, that means there is a leak somewhere....might as well let a pro fix it, and fill it.

2) I don't recommend a junkyard part. This is a common Camry problem, odds are you will get one that will break again anyway. Ebay has new regulators, even though they're made in China, at least it's new. That junkyard part is just as old as the piece that failed in your Camry.

Congrats on the ride, and welcome to the club!
