3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
According to Kelley Blue Book, the 94 Camry get's 21mpg city and 28mpg highway. Ish. All over this forum I've seen reports of mid 30's, low 30's, etc. When I first got the car, I think I was getting around 22, and that was all city driving.
Now yesterday, I went to fill up as the guage was reading a bit below half. I put 10 gallons in it, and there were only 170 miles on the odometer? Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's about 17mpg. And that's with a decent amount of highway driving as well.
That's sort of...terrible. I'm gonna go ahead and blame it on this Ebay SRI I have installed. Ever since I installed it, MPG took a hit, I lost torque...and I've kept it on because...well it does sound nice. However, it's more of a generic thing, and I don't think it goes well with the motor. The pipe is huge and there's absolutely zero resistance.
So in order to keep a bit of growl, I was thinking of just getting a K&N drop in filter for the stock airbox? Whether or not I do that, I'm taking that SRI off today. I love, absolutely LOVE how it sounds, and so does everyone who rides in the car, but 17mpg is ridiculous.
Thanks.

I agree that it varies, but the last three times I went to fill up, I've had a lot less gas mileage than when I was just running the stock intake setup. The car was seafoamed two months ago, and the throttle body was deep creeped and scrubbed as well. I even ran Seafoam through the crank case which I didn't exactly feel right about, and that honestly seemed to improve vibration, but not mpg.
And I'm not one of those people that floors it at every stop sign just to hear it, so the bad mpg is not down to my driving.
Blehhhh...

A good seafoam = lot of smoke . If it reduce vibration, then it did the job.
I suggest u take off the SRI as u wish (no idea wat it is) and cruise somewhere far for a weekend vacation combo with a test, to see the max u can get out of those gals.

and that is exactly why i converted a sri into a cai.
Btw you know if you remove the resonators from your stock intake, it will produce basically the same sound as a SRI or CAI.

You honestly don't even have to floor it down every block of road toget terrible MPG. I've noticed that when I drive, and it's more than 60% stop and go, my mpg plummets.
I usually get around 300+ miles on a tank.
You have to remember though, when the tank shows "empty", you still have at least one or two gals left (though I reccomend filling asap after "empty" is shown).

the whole tank has 18.5, but u only use 14.5 until the light goes on (road balance like highway entry cause it goes on even sooner), so technically u have 4 "magical" reserve gals That's why i've never seen any dealth gas car on the road rather than the veyron

Right, you know what I meant! So, technically Toyota is correct in saying their MPG ratings, you just have to run on fumes to get that many miles racked up

I'll have to try the stock setup without the resonator and see how it sounds. What should I cover the hole up with? I'm gonna miss how deep it sounds...

Their are 2 reasonators. A HUGE onr in the fender and another one on the tubing between the box and the TB. If you have a v6 its gonna be a small squarish box on the side. If you have a i4 its gonna be a huge weird shaped box underneath the tubing.
I used a dremel to cut the hole so it didnt stick out. Then I used PVC rubber tubing, cut that and used clamps to hold it over the hole.

Set up a true CAI!
I'm trying to that after I get paid, because my SRI is stealing my low end torque, like you're saying.
If I could make it thinner at the end of the pipe, it'd be worth it, because the stock SRI is a huge diamater pipe. I will think about setting up a true CAI.
For now though, I wasn't aware that there was a second resonator. I knew of the one connected to the stock intake pipe, but not of the one in the fender. I'll have to look for that...
Thanks.

when was the last time you gave your car a tune-up? plugs, wires and so on? my car is completely stock and i fill up about 14-15 gallons per fill up and after 425-460 miles (80% highway). i would be pissed at your fuel economy as well. my 345hp v8 camaro gets about 25-26mpg with 80% highway.
