3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
This might sound crazy, but has anyone attempted to swap the center console (gear selector or behind that to the armrest) from a gen 4 to a gen 3 camry? I do see that the parking brake is a bit off-center on a gen 4, but was wondering if somehow I could modify how it mounts to make it work. I ask because I'm really attached to my gen 3, don't want to get rid of it, but the lack of reliable cupholders is killing me. I've been looking for a new(er) vehicle but keep on thinking that it won't take much money to make mine just as reliable if not more than what I'd get out of another used vehicle.

you want to sell your gen 3 just because of the cupholders? there is a chance you could fit the gen 4 center console to the gen 3, they are installed the same way... not sure of the dimensions though. I like the cupholders better on the gen 3 than my solara because theyre in the way of my arm when im shifting, but I guess thats just preference.

NO, I'm not going to sell it!!! (it'll stay as a backup car regardless if I do get something else) I've just been looking for something a bit newer because I'm about to have to start traveling a bit for a new position at work. In the meantime, though, I'd like to have better-functioning cupholders, lol.
And maybe the way I worded it sounded wrong, because I'm looking to keep the gen 3, I'd just like to see if anyone has tried to adapt the gen 4 center armrest/parking brake setup to work with it, that's all.

I agree
If you are driving an AUTO then it wouldn't matter, but with 5 spd its kinda difficult to shift with a Mcdonalds Coke in the way

the gen3 cup holders do suck. but theres nothing you can do short of adding universal cup holders. but tell ya what...send me your manual tranny and ill send you my auto and then u wont have to worry about the shifter hitting the cups.

The shifter doesn't hit the cups, I just cant' fit anything larger than a small or medium in the cupholders, and I get thirsty!!!
But seriously, it's not going to stop me from driving it. I was looking at various options, but unless I come across a gen4 in a pull a part, I'm not going to worry about it. Just wondered if someone like Adam had considered it (I noticed he hadn't chimed in yet).

I am curious about this as well becuase my console around the e-brake in my Gen 3 is damaged. Could someone with a Gen 4 post a pic of their center console and armrest?

Think yours are bad? Gen 2's suck. Mine come out from under where the radio is, and sit right in front of the radio and behind the shifter. And besides the fact that it doesnt hold a large + xl soda cup (no im not fat k?) or bottles of any sort, its kinda useless. Besides the fact that you cant use the radio at all when you have a giant cup sitting right in front of it. + possible water damage lol.

My 2 cents.
That's exactly how a gen3 is as well. At least on the gen4's they moved the cupholders up beside the parking brake.

I drink bottled soda and water to combat this issue.....they rest nicely next to the ebrake on a gen 3....but the OEM cup holders in the gen 3 suck some hard ass....especially if you have a flip out screen
Has anyone tried to cut the opening out a little? I was seeing that depending on how you'd position the cuts, there might be a chance some plastic could be removed.
