95 5SFE 5Spd gas smell

Soo... Straight to the point.
Sometimes after I shut the car down I get a gas fumes smell up at the front.
All fuel filter fittings dry, running or off.
All rubber hoses seem ok.
Nothing leaking underneath.
Checked what I thought to be the vacuum fuel press regulator at the passenger side end of the fuel rail, no gas smell in the vac lines.

A guy at the local stealership recommended I check on the charcoal canister.
SO...
You guys agree?
If so, how do I check it?
If not... Whats next??

BTW, this damned thing gets 24-26mpg no matter what I do to it. That annoys me when I get 1MZ-FE Automatic customers at AutoZone claiming 30mpg. If whatever loss of fuel pressure or whathaveyou is contributing to the issue, then...

Fuel rail seals or the cylinder head seals at injectors leaking? Have you tried looking there?

crawl underneath to check all of your fuel lines. they can be leaking, but the plastic cover can be catching the leaking fuel so it might not reach the ground. this happened to me for a couple of weeks until the leak became bad enough to start spilling all over the place.

If you have an active fuel leak it almost always leaves a clean area. Gas is an excellent solvent and removes all the oil and dirt from the area that it is leaking on. Look for a small clean spot. I had a cracked injector that gave me gas fumes and left a nice clean spot in my 90 Camry. (It also made it difficult to start in the morning. Evidently, the leak allowed air into the fuel rail and the gas was able to leak back down to the tank. I had to crank the engine maybe 15 - 20 seconds before the gas got back to the fuel rail.)

Not sure about the charcoal canister. It might make sense. There is also some sort of sensor control of the hoses to it. You might check into the sensor and hoses.
